Coticule love... show off your rock

Good thing that Ardennes is producing nicer rocks as eBay has become less of a goldmine for vintages. Pickers are starting to know what a coticule is/looks for. We've gone from 50%+ of coticules being unidentified stones that can be snagged for a fair price to 95%+ of coticules I find being Id'ed and listed as coticules and 95% of those being listed for several times what they're worth (Particularly from Euro Sellers). I've picked up maybe 5 coticules this year, and paid basically my max for all of them. No truly special stones, no amazing scores, none of the luck I've had in the past on coticules. Honestly Arks, Washita's, even Thuri's have become more of a "score" market this year than Coticules.

And really cool ones? Loaded with manganese, or unbacked and thick, or tons of character? Get ready for a bidding war that will cost you some organs and limbs. Market has gone nuts on "special" Coticules as people see the well for vintages start to dry up.

Those sellers have always been doing that, it's more a lot of fleas are shut at present and ppl aren't as likely to do house sales so supply dries up combined with the fact that ppl aren't throwing disposable cash at family outings and other outdoor things really so the idea of buying a hone comes into play again fo someone cooped up. That's my theory anyway.

Pickens are still good in Florida as long as you don’t mind, Coticules, some assembly required. A seller had these out, one piece on a different table. They commented, when paying, that they were the same size. Love a motivated seller and another 7” vintage rescue that will live another day

I wild find at today’s market. A wood grainy natural that has appearance similarities to a La Grise. A 5 inch stone that was difficult to lap, running on the hard side. Has a interesting heavy bevel/chamfer on the BBW side.

Pick this one up on eBay for a pretty good price because of a couple divots that it looked like the guy had dropped a screwdriver or something onto it. it was a lot more work to lap them out while preserving the stamp than I was expecting but it's finally flat and smooth.

Nice stone, I don't think it would qualify as a kosher because there's one tan line in it, but it feels a lot like several of the koshers I've had.

I never hang on to these stamped and labeled Stones very long because they sell for more than they're worth in my opinion but it'll be fun to play with for a while.

Double sided paddle with a coticule on both sides. Interestingly, after lapping... these coticules seem not only to be from the same layer, but actually to have originally been in a single linear (~13.25"x1") stretch, which was then cut into two ~6.5"x1" hones and put on opposite sides of a double-paddle stone.

What an interesting way to mount those hones. Can't help but wonder if there was a special purpose behind that.

I bought it hoping it was a single stone and there was a hybrid layer hidden in the wood and they did it like that to mount both sides of the les lat yellow... but no such luck.

What an odd way to mount them!
Did they have different amounts of concavity ? Or both pretty flat

Both were relatively dished but one was by far more dish than the other it looked like they had primarily used it until they dished it almost to the paddle and then they switched to the other one maybe... I pried it out and lapped it and it still has about an eighth inch left, but it would have been almost flush with the paddle if I hadn't pried it out. The other one I left in the paddle and was able to lap it just fine.

I wish that would have worked out for you. It would have been among the greatest wild finds of all time! Have you noticed a difference in cutting speed between the two sides?
