Corticule stone

The Superior Shave thesuperiorshave.com/Coticules has lots and lots to choose from. Folks will recommend different types, sizes and such, but you should be fine emailing Jarrod (at TSS) and telling him what you are looking for. Also get a slurry stone if you may ever be looking to do anything more than just maintain a blade. Enjoy!

These are general honing questions, not specific to any stone. It's a "whatever works for you" kind of thing. Check out the honing section of the Wiki, that'll answer the basic questions. The real answer is "hone how you like, work on one stone (or slurry thickness) until your edge is maxed out, move on to the next, and next, and next, until the edge is done." Circle strokes, x strokes, rolling x strokes... it all depends on what your razor is like and what you prefer.

How many circles if I need to do them. And how many x strokes. And do I need to use tape

As was said - it all depends. There is no set recipe - if there were, we would have far fewer messages about it. ;-} It was mentioned that you could go to coticule.be and check out all their information. Also, to watch them in action, go to YouTube and search on coticule honing.

I don't personally like them but, boy, there are folks who do! You can make a coticule do most jobs but I find specific stones are much quicker. The edge is a milder edge - at least that is what the big boys down at the pool hall say. I prefer a bit more aggressive - but stones, like almost everything, are a personal choice and YMMV.

I know this is another honing question but is it a another insider stone

Insider stone? Like "a secret"? Nope. Coticules have been used for sharpening for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Btw, they are sold lots of places...eBay, BST on various forums, antique shops if you're lucky, etc.

I don't mean to be rude, but it might do you some good to read this guide which is stickied at the top of this sub forum.

What you are asking would be analogous to my going into the general shaving forum and posting: How do I shave, how many passes do I do, what razor do I use, etc etc

Well I emailed jarrod from the superiorshave and I asked him some questions and I'm waiting to see what he says

He will give you some great help picking out a stone. If you are looking for information on how to get started you are gonna have to do some reading. Check out the link to coticule.be someone posted, above. That is the information vault for all things coticule. If you get stuck on something, let us know and we will help you out... but it does require some reading. The good news is that there is a boatload of information already documented.

You should learn straight shaving and become familiar with stropping and shaving and honing basics...then ask about natural stones. Otherwise you may end up frustrated and out $$$.

A slow stone on water will be easier to finish the edge on.

You hone until finished. You hone on your bevel setter, or heavy slurry until it the bevel is set, then you start your dilutions.
