Cooking Magazines?

Hey everyone,
Birthday is coming up and I was thinking of getting a subscription to a good cooking magazine if there are any. I get my recipes primarily off the internet right now and a few cookbooks, but I'd love to have another option along with a few interviews and in depth articles.

Cooks illustrated great well documented recipes gadget reviews. Illustrations beautiful.
If you follow one of their recipes closely you'll be rewarded.

Food & Wine magazine is pretty good. There's a good balance between interviews and recipes.

In Australia, I really enjoyed Super Food Ideas. They had a lot of good recipes and you could sometimes get the ones where you use the leftovers from the night before to make today's meal. I reckon those where great so you wouldn't waste anything.

Honestly, if I have a choice, I would probably pick-up a recipe book instead and subscribe to a newsletter or podcast for the interview bit. However, if I were going with a magazine, Food & Wine is my pick.
 
The old as in no longer published Gourmet is also a fun read. They have an online archive. I think

I joined Cooks Illustrated online. I quickly became frustrated with looking for a recipe only to be presented with a recipe that could only be read if you paid a bit more to get this or that cookbook. They also push out email offers at a tremendous rate. To me their marketing is too aggressive and the price/value ratio is out of whack. Their recipes are very good though and easy to follow etc.

Typically I'll Google a recipe and look at a few and pick and choose what I want to include in what I make.
 
The Cooks illustrated magazine is a nice publication and does not print ads , I was not referring to their online products. One of the best.
 
I have to concur with the earlier post about Cooks Illustrated online. Recipes were ho-hum; more like busy housewife have-to-have-dinner-on-the-table-but-still-have-to-take-the-kids-to-soccer-practice stuff.

Bon Appetit is always a decent choice, but if you want something REALLY DIFFERENT.....

Pick up a subscription to Donna Hay Magazine. It is an Aussie publication which has some of the most interesting and tasty recipes I have come across in years. Good articles on cooking technique as well. Worth a shout for sure. www.donnahay.com
 
Cooks Illustrated is a good bet for cooking tips and for easy-to-follow recipes. Interviews and in depth articles, not so much. You can find copies at the news stands if you want to take a peak. Gourmet was tremendous for idea gathering and articles; beautiful magazine unfortunately killed in favor of the more mediocre Bon Appetite (at least in my opinion). There are a number of others; go to a Barnes & Noble book store and look in the magazine section.
 
Cooks Illustrated is the best and is very usable unlike so many over the top recipe books. Everything I have tried has worked well from enchiladas to popcorn.

Wow I've been told. As I said I like Cooks Illustrated but not the limits they put on without additional subscriptions and their intensive email marketing.
 
I really like "Taste of Home"... well, at least I like the food that comes from the recipes.

I got a subscription as a gift to my daughter-in-law. I often reap the rewards from that gift! I'm most certainly going to renew the subscription.... and fight to keep the daughter-in-law if there ever is a divorce.
 
Taste of home does a good job especially with casseroles.
baked goods too. Very inexpensive as well.

+1 on all this. Quality recipes that they test out thoroughly & describe to you why what they're doing does work, not just some 'repeat this' recipe.

Their 'marketing' stuff does get annoying - I get e-mails from them weekly (if not more frequent) about subscribing to this service or buy this book. They used to do that real annoying 'send you a book & if you don't send it back in 5 days you automatically buy it thing'. That hasn't happened in a few years, though, so I suspect they got some major flak for that.

All that notwithstanding, I love the magazine & will continue to subscribe.
 
I would check out discountmags.com. While it's slightly sexist, they should have some great deals on food/home magazines around mothers day. I always pick up super cheap subscriptions for magazines through them. I got a 3-year golf digest subscription for $9 (total) last year around fathers day and a 1-year bon appetit subscription for $5 before christmas.

And almost on queue, I just got an email from discountmags for offering 2 year subscriptions to either taste of home or saveur for $9.

Thanks for all the suggestions gents! I am going to pick a couple up on newstands and see what I think.

I do lots of stuff on seriouseats.com already, but sometimes, I want more!
 
It really depends on what you like. My paramour's mother got me a subscription to "Cooking with Paula Deen" (her mother loves and has met Paula Deen / shown off a herb garden she keeps for historic Williamsburg). The recipes are good (if you're into southern cooking) and you can find interesting stuff (the internet would yield as well) like how to make your own self rising flour, etc...
 
Cooks Illustrated is excellent in that they go to great lengths to perfect the technique and recipe. My wife is a superlative cook, with first rate skills and technique, yet she constantly finds tips on how to do something. For many years the best magazine was Gourmet which is now, sadly, gone. The problem with Gourmet was that their recipes assumed that you had mastered a variety of techniques that were required for the recipe. CI's recipes may be a bit mundane, but they don't fail if you stick to them and you'll learn some techniques along the way.
