Considering a slant

I've been DE shaving for a couple of years now, but always had some difficulty right around my neck line. I know it's a trouble spot for a lot of people, but it was nearly impossible for me to get a close shave without irritation.

Anyway, I had been considering getting a slant style razor as some have said that will help this issue. Then in another thread, someone mentioned the Gillette slide as a way to mimic the slant. So, this morning I went ahead and tried "the slide". I'm blown away. My shave is close and nearly irritation free -- and the little irritation is probably due to my inexperience with the method.

So my question is, would a slant be even better as it wouldn't be as technique driven -- i.e. the angle I moved the blade across my face would be defined by the razor head.

Anyone have any opinions?

I think the slant is way over rated, mine shaved no better then the 33c I had.
You better get one and try it, otherwise you will never know:001_smile

I personally haven't tried a slant yet. I have a trouble spot on the right side of jaw, along the jawline, and right under on the neck. If I try to go for for a close shave there...no matter how I do it, I get irritation. I'm not sure if I gave up on the Gillette slide too quickly (before I could master it). I can't do anything but two with grain passes. I'll occasionally go for XTG in that area for the finish. Even that sometimes causes irritation. So, I go for DFS/BBS everywhere else, and aim to just look presentable in the trouble areas...If I do anything else, I get redness, and bumps. I too am curious to see the answers to your question. :001_smile

I have a rare, very mild slant razor. It's called a Krect Spiral Curve. Today was my second day using it and it's been great.

I've periodically rediscovered the Gillette slide and have found that I lack the self control to execute it consistently. I seem to get carried away with it and pay for it by the end of the shave.

If you you're getting good results with your technique, I'd say stick with it and work on refining the technique. While the slide technique probably doesn't replicate the Merkur slant geometry with 100% accuracy, it sounds like you're picking it up nicely.

I have the same problem on the neck, this is what works for me. After two passes going with the grain, I then do short passes in about 20 degree increments until I am going XTG, then the same increments until ATG

Yes I have a opinion;

First let me say like so many others here on the B&B I collect and use many DE razors. I happen to enjoy collecting and using Slants. Weather its the Long or Short handle or gold or nickle it always a very enjoyable shave. I have found that it works best for me with a Feather Blade.

It seems you have studied and perfected your technique. I hope that you try other types and brands of Razors. For me its the rotation of razors which make a fun thing.

Thus far I've had one really good shave, so I wouldn't say I've perfected it. I also tried a new shaving soap this morning. I don't think that was the cause of the great shave, but it did feel nice and smooth.

This is definitely an experimental process and it's fun to try new things.

Thanks for that bit of information. I'll have to give this a try. :thumbup1:

I have doubts that the "Gillette Slide" truly mimics the shaving characteristics of a Merkur Slant, though, if that technique solves your problem you should continue to employ it. As mentioned before, you should probably go ahead and try a Slant, just for the experience. I happen to think the Slant is the best shaving DE I have tried. YMMV, etc.

It does give a very nice shave, but I wouldn't say it is any better than my Aristocrat Junior or my Rocket HD.

Nice razor though, but probably a little over-rated. I guess most of your results come from technique.

I think the Gillette Slide works better on some parts of the face than on others. On flat surfaces, like the sides of the face and chin, and on the neck, it works great. On the "corners" of the chin and the upper lip, it's courting disaster.

The problem with the slant is that you get "the Slide" all the time, everywhere. OTOH, with a regular head, you can use the Slide where it works best, and use a straight stroke where it is safest.

The Slide technique is not hard to master, especially on the flat surfaces. Just remember to not put any pressure on the handle, let the weight of the head do the work.

Standard disclaimer: YMMV.

The slant provides excellent shaves. The correct blade selection is critical. Blades that work well: Feather, Iridium Super, Astra Keramik and Gillette Yellow.

Love my slant. I too have issues on my neck. The slant gives me a very good shave in that area, but I have to go very easy with lots of short strokes. Otherwise it eats me alive.

Oh, and like others have said, use a feather blade.

I have issues cutting the hair on my neck close. The hair on either side of my throat grows sideways towards the sides of my neck, and almost flat against my skin. My slant is the only thing that will cut this hair close. And I have totally eliminated the WTG pass I just do a XTG and a ATG with some slight touch up and I am good to go.

That's why I sold mine as I only use cheap blades.

Tried a Slant and it didn't work for me.

However it may work for you.

What the hell, give it try.

And I'm using his Slant to good results!

I'd say a Slant is different, not better or worse, than a regular razor. I like the way it cuts, but I could go back to a regular HD if absolutely necessary.
