What's new

congrats to whoever got the psycho w/ key

I saw that, actually, but this was after I'd just paid qwanzek for a couple. Original key is a very nice-to have, certainly.

I had the highest bid until some one stole the auction with 2 seconds remaining. It made it impossible for me to increase my bid.....:mad3:

That, my friend, is the fine art of the snipe. Ethical? Maybe not. Effective? Yes, if you're willing to gamble. Sometimes snipers lose if their timing is off, or there's a delay on the network preventing their bid from arriving on time. This is why ebay gives you the ability to submit a maximum bid, so that snipers might be twarted, and you get to determine just how much you're willing to pay. This is a good thing, because oftentimes snipers will set their max bid extremely high in order to win at any cost. So in the end, unless ebay changes their policy, keeping it sane with the max bid option is a good way to go. Besides, it's those people willing to win at any cost that end up driving the high prices!

Winning means more than beating the other guy. To truly win means winning on your terms, and being willing to let go of it if you can't. After all, tomorrow is another day...

I'm sorry to hear that you lost out.

It is a fine are indeed. I cant lie, I have done it my fair share of times and I got some really great prices and steals out of it. So I guess it is karma....:confused1 On this particular auction I had my bid decently high considering the offering. I was in the middle of upping the bid and the screen refreshed automatically since other bids were entered and I didnt have enough time to react.

Anyways. There is always a next time, hopefully.

I've been known to indulge in a snipe from time to time, but only with things I know are one of a kind items that I'm willing to shell out for. Trying to win that bid can get addicting, though. It takes a lot of discipline to keep from going over the edge. Otherwise, it can be fun to see just how close you can get to that final second with your snipe. I have actually been able to get one or two bids in at the very final second of the bid! I've also missed out by a second as well. And other times, pulling the trigger too soon, have been outbid by another sniper. Hoisted by my own petard, as it were!

And so it goes...

Excellent eye! I would have never seen that unless you pointed it out. I would have never bid on that. Who ever got that got a good deal IMO. I heard that the keys alone were going for 100.00 and that was awhile back.

Personally, I don't see anything unethical about what is referred to as "sniping." To me, it feels like a natural reaction to the eBay fixed-duration auction. I think it's actually more fair, given that the chance for a bidding war is reduced. Not that I really know much about auctions...

On the other hand, this is only really to your benefit if you know the relative value of what you're bidding on, and you've seen it come and go before in one marketplace or another (like on the BST). Bidding wars DO give you the opportunity to battle someone to the finish for something one-of-a-kind.

Again, I'm not well versed in auction history or fairness, but this has been my experience.

(And no, I did not bid on the Hospital Tech. I did not even notice the auction. Unfortunately, my eyes aren't as sharp as some others in these forums)

We'll not have that kind of language around here thank you very much.

This is B&B, where embracing your RAD is not only accepted but encouraged...:lol::lol:

Welcome to B&B Bob.

Picked up a Gillette prison or asylum razor with key for $66.00 on EBay today. Seems expensive for a razor that looks like a Gillette Tech, but with a key. Looking forward to finding out how it shaves with a feather blade installed. Razors now include: Feather AS, Merkur slant, Gillette '30's era comb, a Clausen and Co "comb" travel razor (made in Soligen, Germany) and the "psycho" razor I just bought. Hopefully I can stop buying razors now:)

If you only got it for $66.00, it must be one with a home-made key because the ones with original keys go for much more than that, usually $150+. Got pictures?

Nice i got one a while back, i paid about $110.00 or so, not really sure on exact price, could of been more, that key is super solid weighs about 3 times more then the razor itself, ive never weighed it on a scale but from the weight of it in my hand that is what it feels like. Ive never shaved with one, but mine is from 1951 or 1952. They are Rare with the key, since they were sold in packs of Ten Razors with only one key.

It seems like the best way to do the bidding thing is to know what you are prepared to spend, and go with that and not a penny more, kinda like gambling in a way.

Congrats it looks good.
