Complete NIB Noob: Pen for Girlfriend

My girlfriend has a thing for pens. I rarely write anything but she loved em.

Where do I start looking for a quality NIB for my girlfriend. She's finishing school for medical assistance and plans to continue further education in surgery tech.

Thanks in advance!

Ballpoint, or fountain pen ?
Does she own any fountain pens already ?
and how much is your budget on this purchase ?

any colours or designs she may like as well ?,
and if its her pen you may need ink as well

if you can let us know that im sure we can come up with a selection or 10, to help you find the perfect gift for her

Would also be useful to know how she uses her pens...does she carry one with her all the time, or is it something she keeps at home for jotting down notes or journal entries?

She has them on her all the time and she has never used a fountain pen before. That doesn't require dipping it to use right?

Budget is around 35 and under. She love purple and owls. Ink black. It sounds like she wants fountain ink and ballpoint isn't her favorite.

This is what I'd recommend in a purple FP, but it is out of stock: http://www.gouletpens.com/Violet_Fine_Platinum_Plaisir_Fountain_Pen_p/plat-pgb-1000-28-f.htm

I own the same pen in black and use it as my home desk pen. Works great.

How about a Faber-Castell Loom?

Right.

The name "fountain pen" comes from the fact that it contains its ink inside the pen so ink comes out like water comes out of a fountain ... from within. Before that, all pens were "dip pens" that you had to dip in an inkwell every sentence or so, like a feather quill.

Cross makes a nice cartridge fountain pen available at staples for like $38. Its quite nice and the cartridge system is convenient, it was my first FP and I enjoyed the time I spent with it.

On a side note I have had some great fun recently restoring vintage fountain pens. You can find some really nice stuff out there for next to nothing and a fresh sac will run you less than $2. If you are handy and want a fun little project this may be just the thing. Who knows you may even get into fountain pens after all this.

Regards
Dave

I just finished this restore over the weekend.

i wouldn't consider myself handy but I try! I wouldn't have the foggiest idea what to look for at our weekend flea market trips :/

My grandfather was a surgeon and always had both a fountain pen and a ballpoint pen on him at all times. The ballpoint was for pressing on triplicate forms, the f/p for jotting notes, signing things, and the such.

I think a Lamy Safari and a Parker Jotter would be a very utilitarian combo for a young doctor.

I think a Lamy Safari would be a good start. It is rugged and not too big a deal if something does happen to it. You can buy a convertor for it down the road and get some bottled inks (it comes with one cartridge of Lamy blue ink). I carry mine everywhere even to work when I was working. Gouletpens.com is a good place to buy from no matter what pen you use. They know their stuff and are very helpful if you have any questions or problems, I even got some candy with my order.
