Comparison of new and old SE blades

Finally got some old Ever-Ready blades as part of a cased razor set and did some measuring to see size differences vs. modern blades....as the sheet shows, the only major difference is in the spine thickness, which would seem to tilt the blade edge down at a greater angle against the blade stop hooks.

That interests me strangely. Could this be why the old instructions say to place the head flat against the face, while we all tilt a degree or two away from the face for a slightly more aggresive angle?

By calculation, the Ever-Ready blade sits at a 3.06 degree angle, the modern 1.41 degrees.

And look at this photo of two Micromatics - see how the nickel finish has two buttons to tilt the blade - is this just to secure it better against the front hooks, or to compensate for thinner - spined blades? (the button height is approximately .020, which lifts the centerline of a new blade to about the same height as the old)

Interesting.:001_smile I think you will find the Micromatic was designed to accept the newer thin spined blades and the double life spineless d/e blades. As for the older pre- 1930s Gem's,who knows?, They seem to work fine with modern blades. But then again some older S/E razors are able to accept modern blades and wedge blades.:wink2:
