Comparing brushes

It's hard to know if you will like something you buy sight unseen sometimes, since everybody is different and what one personae loves another won't. But I have read so many great things about Simpsons brushes that I'm close to pulling the trigger on a duke or chubby. Right now my best brush is an SOC 2 band badger and I love it. I face lather also so my questions are, how would a Simpson compare, should I invest in a 2 band, should I go with a Duke or should I go all out on a chubby 2 band and suggestions would be great. Also I'm not in a huge rush, but trying to snag one in B&B is really hard any advice would be great thanks

That's probably the reason I've bought 20 brushes in 3 years. Eight of those were Simpsons in Best, and I've been happy with the brand. At the top of my want list would be a Duke 3 2-band, but it's out of my price range so I may have to eventually settle for one in Best after I sell a couple to fund it.

I like dense brushes with short lofts (scrubby and soft), my preference with Simpson best or 2-band would be a Chubby (1 or 2). I prefer the Rooney Heritage 2xl over the Simpson best or 2-band (which is also good). I also really like custom brushes or restored brushes with finest knots (2-band) from the golden nib (cheaper route, great value). I have only 1 Simpson remaining and it is a Chubby 2 in best (big soft and scrubby with minimal scritch), the only brush from them I would like more would be their Chubby 2 2-band but the 2xl takes that spot.

I have three Simpsons Brushes, a Chubby One in Best, a Persian Jar Two in Super and a Classic One in Manchurian.
So three different handle shapes in three different sizes with three different hair types, all three are fantastic in their own way and I am considering ordering a special series M7 in either Silvertip or Manchurian. I also have a Shavemac in DO1 and an Edwin Jagger in Silvertip but whilst there are very nice brushes in my opinion they are not as good as my Simpsons.
My point is that you can't go wrong whichever Simpsons brush you choose, I for one will no longer bother experimenting with other brand as I think Simpsons are a sure fire bet. I accept that not every one will agree with me but Simpsons are hugely popular for a reason.

The Duke 2 and Chubby 1 are very close in performance. I compared them side by side a while ago.

I always steer folks who want a face lathering badger brush to the Duke 2 in best as it is a good brush at a reasonable price.

BUT......

If you have deep enough pockets go for the Chubby 2... You won't regret it.

Wow, great thread, so I can't go wrong face lathering with either brush. I'm probably going for a Duke unless a chubby goes up for sale here but getting one isa long shot at best. Thanks Turtle

The Duke 2 is an awesome brush, though I prefer the size of the Duke 1.

Yes, you can't argue with the huge positive feedback on these brushes, by the way I'm curious you living in the UK must make it easy to pop into a shop and pick up some great goodies how are the prices for you ?

A nice controlled brush for someone starting out is the Emperor.

Also, it has the benefit of a longer handle if you ever fancy bowl lathering later. Even if you don't, it's an exceptionally comfortable shape.

My Chubby 1 two-band is fantastic. The Cubby 1 in Best is also a very nice brush. i prefer them to the Dukes, but YMMV.
Have you ever considered the Rooney Heritage Stubby XLs? They are phenomenal.
A cheaper solution would be the Frank Shaving synthetic brushes. Incredible brushes for the money and lather monsters!

You are right, as such a large amount of traditional shaving products are English it does help living here. One fact that might cheer you up though is that US shavers would seem to be paying the same price or even less than a shaver here in the UK. Unfortunately the opposite isn't true, I just purchased a Cobra Classic razor by mail order here in the UK, it cost me £135, I believe it's $165 in the US and that's about £110 but hey it's only money!!!

In terms of shopping it's a very dangerous situation.

I live about a 40 minute train ride from Paddington station in London, from there it's 15 minutes on the underground to say, Piccadilly.

From here and within less than a square mile I can visit Geo.F.Trumper in two locations, DR Harris, Taylors of Old Bond Street, Truefit and Hill and last but not least Santa Maria Novella.

I think that you can see why it's so dangerous(to the wallet).

In addition there are many great Websites to purchase from in the UK and Europe wher you can purchase American/Japanese/European products.

Last but not least I buy my Simpsons brushes direct from them, the service is great and you usually get a comlimentary Simpsons luxury shaving cream with the higher end brushes.

I was in London a couple of weeks ago and bought some SMN products for the first time, hellishly expensive but very good.
