collapsible scuttle

I was looking at back packing gear and saw silicon like material cups that were collapsible. I got to thinking that somebody should make a collapsible scuttle. Does this exist?

I have also looked, since I have a long trip coming up, and I don't think so. But, the collapsible bowl would work great for cold water shaving!

this works perfect for me. i can live without a scuttle while travelling or camping, but not without a mug to soak my brush etc.

about $10 and unbreakable.

Might want to contact Julie from Dirty Bird Pottery... I am sure she can come up with something! She does amazing work!

i have never heard of such a thing, but, there is always ebay and the crazy things you can find there. Hee hee.
You could just face-lather and rinse you brush under running water and use cream, or even brushless-cream while traveling.

Many, many years ago when I was a child they made a collapsable metal cup. It consisted of a series of tapered metal bands that would lock together from friction as they were pulled upward from their base. Hadn't thought of those in a long time. Wish I'd had sense enough to keep one tucked away in a box somewhere. Anyone else remember collapsable cups?

I just saw one a couple of weeks ago in an antique store. It was a collapsible aluminum cup, probably held about 8 oz, had a lid, and seemed to be in pretty good shape. It was about $4. They are around.

I just bought this silicone bowl for an upcoming trip. We have similar ones for camping, and they work great.

Wouldn't the silicon act as an insulator to keep your lather cold and the surrounding how water hot? I really don't think that folding silicon tableware is going to be the solution.

If somebody wanted to make an old style collapsible cup with sliding rings of metal or a non-insulating plastic it would work. I seem to recall cereal bowls made the same way. Just get the collapsible cup and bowl and either glue or rivet the two together to get around the floating problem. The issue now is whether whipping up a lather would collapse all or part of it. Another concern would be if water leaked in. I don't remember the collapsible cups sealing that well.

I think the best you could do is to improvise a scuttle by placing a stainless steel or enamelware bowl on top of water in another bowl (possibly a collapsible silicon cereal bowl) or a cooking pot. The inner bowl is going to want to float if allowed to do so, but if the inner bowl has a wider lip than the opening at the top of the outer bowl it won't flip and let water in. It would just bob around a bit as you whip up lather. If your only cooking pot is really narrow, it will only heat the bottom of the inner bowl, but that should be enough.

I have been thinkng about doing some camping and had to wonder whether you really want to bring along a purpose built shaving scuttle that is good for one thing only. Considering size and weight constraings, I just don't see that it would be worthwhile. With the improvised scuttle I suggested above the inner bowl could continue to be used for any kind of washing or even to eat from if thoroughly cleaned. The outer bowl or pan just holds water, so could continue to be used for other purposes.

Get an inflatable watering bowl for a dog and fill it with warm water instead of air.
