Coffee failure II- Oh no

I brewed up my morning coffee today and as I poured it into my glass mug it looked like weak tea...Crap!.... filter failure? No.... the grind was WAY to coarse, like French press+. Bottom line? My grinder is out of service.

Contacted Joe at Baratza and with his help sorted out the part I need to replace. Very good experience with them. So I will be drinking FP and perk for a while.

I gave up on using a coffee bean grinder a couple of years ago.

Now I just buy enough beans for one week. I have the store grind my bean selection in their industrial grinder for "French Press". Then I store the grounds in a air tight container. As a side note I've never noticed any difference in flavor between storing the ground beans in the fridge or on the counter at room temperature. To me the only important storage item is an air tight container.

My experience with coffee is that the consistency of the grind is the top priority when using a French Press.

Sorry to hear that. Boy, when it rains, it pours. Good reason to have a backup. I still have the old cuisinart, but it really sucks compared to the Baratza. The baratza isn't supposed to do a fine enough grind for good turkish, so maybe a zassenhaus hand mill would make a good backup grinder that can also function well for the occassional turkish cup. It does have the advantage of allowing one to work off the suffering rather than cursing through it. By the way, which do you have?

Steve,
I have the Virtuoso grinder, I picked this one as I was advised it has a different burr set than the other models and is OK for half a cheek espresso based drinks my bride likes once in a while.

Uh oh! I just got a Virtuoso. Is this what I have to look forward to?

In general, I would say no. If something DOES happen to go wrong, however, you do have great service and product support to look forward to.

Baratza has an elite reputation for service.

I am delighted to report that the part for my grinder has arrived and the coffee beans are trembling in fear. :thumbup1:

Jim,
If you dont mind telling us, what broke?

There is a plastic housing for the ring burr, it has 3 small tabs which slide into a slot on the grind adjustment ring. On my unit, two of the tabs broke alowing the ring burr to loose contact with the central burr.

Jim,
Thanks for the post. I have one of these as well. I thought the tabs on top would have broke first, the ones that engage the hopper. Good luck with the new burrs.
