Clubman Bay Rum -- Am I the only one who doesn't like it?

Well I finally got a bottle of Clubman Bay Rum. Trust me... the Walgreens website is not accurate. After going to three Walgreens that should have had it, I finally got a small bottle on ebay for 99 cents, plus $5 shipping.

I've smelled old Burt's Bees, and got a sample of Trumpers. I like bay rum. And it appears that EVERYONE loves Clubman Bay Rum. So I was absolutely surprised when I took a sniff.

This stuff is terrible. And I swear I could smell some god awful Clubman in the scent.

So... is it just me? Did I get a bad bottle? Or are there others out there who really dislike the stuff?

I wouldn't call it awful but I did stop using it.

It just has to much of a cinnamon/clove scent to it. Someone on the forum described it as smelling like "Big Red" chewing gum. After reading that I just couldn't use it anymore.:blushing:

When it comes to Bay Rums I've settled down to Masters brand.

In fact I'm thinking of buying it by the gallon I like it that much.

I got a bottle recently at CVS or one of the local pharmacies. If my wife didn't like it so much, I wouldn't use it at all. To me, it smells exactly like that Red Cross brand clove oil you buy for a toothache. The slight Bay Rum scent fades, but the clove scent stays. So no, you aren't the only one.

FWIW, I sniffed a bottle of Masters Bay Rum at the new local Sally's Beauty Supply yesterday. Not much smell of anything.

No, you are not the only one...
I bought a bottle awhile back, tried it once and got rid of it.
Just not my cup of tea...

I do like other Pinauds though ( Musk, Special Reserve, After Shave and Citrus Musk ). But no Bay Rum for me...

No, I don't like it either....too strong and too sharp a spice scent. Here's what I did though, I didn't want to throw it out, let it sit there unused or mail it somewhere in a PIF......so to use it, I just cut it with either regular clubman or clubman vanilla.......more accurately...I usually use about 3 drops of aftershave...so I put in my hand two drops of bay rum, and one drop of either regular clubman or vanilla - then use this - it dilutes the spice scent, softens the overall smell but keeps the scent "bay rummy" - or you could do what some people suggest and combine your AS and ASB in one application.

Good idea. I am going to have to try this because I too did not care for the smell.

Cinnamon I love. Cloves not so much (once got yelled at for 10 minutes by a guy who was chewing clove gum. Remember that guy's face everytime I smell them).

I PIF'ed it to a guy who loves Clubman Bay Rum and made a new friend. Win / Win.

No, you're not the only one. I tried it, and found it just this side of terrible. I've never understood the love affair some have with it, but, to each his own!

I love bay rums, and this one definitely HAS bay rum in it, but it is overpowered by cinnamon and clove, as mentioned. Still, it's cheap, smells good in its own way, and feels pretty good, but I prefer (much more expensive) Royall and Dominica, and the awesome Ogalalla offerings.

You are not alone.

The only way I wear it now is after having emptied 1/2 the bottle down the sink and mixing what's left slap-dash with the following:

Pinaud Musk
Pinaud Special Reserve
Masters BR
Avon Deep Woods
Avon Spicy
Lime Sec
bottled oils of Pine Needle, Sage and Orange

The result might sound horrid but it isn't - it's quite interesting. It pretty much hides the clove but danged if it STILL doesn't cover up the blasted cinnamon.

I hate, detest, loathe, and despise the smell of cloves. The only thing I would ever use that has even a hint of the smell is Shave Secret, only because its weak scented in the product and it goes away as soon as I'm done shaving. I find it difficult not to call the IRS and report people who smell like cloves for evading their taxes, or seeing an amazing similarity between them and whoever is on the cover of those wanted posters for robbing a bank. They should at least be made to stand in a lineup for their transgressions against my nose. But, YMMV. :c6:
