Clubman AS issue

i picked up a bottle of Clubman AS last week and have used it twice now. i really love the classic scent but it drys my face out! about 5-10 minutes after applying my face feels tight and its ashy dry. its the first time ive used it and i love the scent. before Clubman i've used Proraso (green lid) for a solid 4 months with no issues. do you think its the alcohol in the Clubman thats causing this ill effect?

at the same time i started using Clubman i also started using a Crystal Alum bar before i apply the AS. i rinse the alum off then go for the AS. would this be the issue too?

i'd really hate to stop using it as i love the scent. GRRRR.

crap...sorry i just realized i should have posted in the aftershave thread. i dont know how to delete and repost in a dif thread.

It's probably due to the alcohol. I apply it on the face after a cold rinse, let it sit while I clean my instruments, and then rinse off with cold water. I then apply Neutrogena Razor Defense Post-Shave lotion to moisturize. I live in the desert, so skin tends to dry out. I still get the scent of Clubman and keep my skin moisturized, which actually makes it very smooth and healthy looking.

DEshaver:
Although Clubman can be drying upon one's face and body, the addition of about 10 drops of glycerine per 6oz bottle greatly increases the moisturizing and toning aspects and 'kicks' Clubman aftershaves & eau de colognes 'up a notch'. :yesnod:

Besides adding glycerine, I also add around 2oz of Royall Lymes to increase the 'long-lasting' scent of my 'one & only go-to' Eau de Cologne...Clubman Citrus Musk.

But since you're already using Clubman AS...you're now a proud member (along with anyone using Clubman products), of the fictional, sacred and utopian Order of Pinaud (a.k.a.'The Club')".

I will now administer (written by our scribe, member Mario [a.k.a. Gatsby]), the Order of Pinaud sacred Oath...please repeat after me;

"I do solemnly affirm that I will uphold my membership to the Order of Pinaud (a.k.a "The Club") through my loyalty to the fine A/S, my unwavering dedication to assist all

wet shaving enthusiasts, and to promote the iron-clad fellowship that is B & B.
I do swear this on my sword, my (name your razor), and, my lance, my (name your brush): my weapons of choice in smiting the daily scourge that is my stubble".

i saw a bottle of glycerine at the store the other day and thought "glycerine..ohhhhh glycerine" and then thought "so this is the stuff Bush was referring to..whats it do?"
i think i'll pick up a bottle and add it to my Clubman. i dont want to stop using it especially now that im a member of "The Club".

I put a small amount of Nivea After Shave Balm in my palm, then pour in some Clubman (any one except Lime Sec, which I couldn't take to), rub my hands together to mix the two, and apply to my face. The bit of Nivea doesn't alter the Clubman scent and takes out a bit of the sting if I've been careless. If only Pinaud made something with menthol...

A small dab of moisturing creme after the Pinaud has dried seems to work well for me. I don't notice any particular dryness, but now I do since the furnace has been coming on.

I'd say forget about the alum.* Rinse the soap off your face and splash on the Clubman. See how that works for you. As the Count said, a bit of glycerin in your Clubman will help out too, but try it plain for a while.

* I am not a fan of alum under any circumstances. It's like rubbing a brick made out of styptic pencils all over your face.

I'll use a dab of moisturizer or -- more likely -- an aftershave balm after Clubman. Works great for me, at least. I haven't tried to mix in glycerin, which seems like a good idea. I might not remember this right, and I've never tried the combo, but: I think in Leisureguy's book, he says some people get bad reactions when using an alum block and Nivea ASB.

Also, if you put the clubman in your hands and hold out a minute (even rub together) you'll get some of the alcohol to evaporate before it gets to your face. Might be worth a try.
I think Aqua Velva already has some glycerin in it. Far less drying. But of course, it's not the same scent at all and it's heterodox to the Order of Pinaud.

I diluted down my last bottle of Proraso aftershave with unscented witch hazel. I'm not exactly an authority, but hey, worked for me and might for you. Another option to experiment with.
My Clubman AS issue here is that it's not readily available in local stores...:a36:

these are all great ideas and i imagine i'll try them all to find what works best for me. i think first i'll skip the Alum.

+1
This is exactly what I do and I have no issues.

I have this same problem with alcohol-based after shaves.

Try following your AS with an unscented moisturizer or alcohol-free ASB. I always follow with Baxter ASB and it works wonders for me!

A lot of good ideas to increase the moisture in your face. I just wanted to comment on why it may dry your face while other splashes do not.

The proraso aftershave has a humectant which attracts water from the dermis to the surface of the skin and holds it there. Glycerine and Proplyn Glycol are examples.

Clubman is Alcohol, Fragrance and color, so their is nothing to hold the moisture to your face.

I always follow up splashes with a moisturizer as my face would look like the saharah desert.

I think you're safe to do that. Unless you are nicking the heck out of your face, I don't see the benefit.
i started using it because i also started going ATG and always under my chin i get a few nicks. i'll just have to use the styptic pen.

i tried the Clubman without the Alum today and have gotten better results. not out of the woods yet tho as it still feels slightly dry. but a major improvement from yesterday.

Clubman dries my skin out. There's nothing I can do to prevent that but to use another, better AS or balm. Clubman has no moisturizing properties to speak of so you may be fighting a losing battle here.

There are as many aftershave recipes as there are aftershaves, and each has it's own special niche.
Clubman falls into the 'very traditional American' category, nothing but alcohol and fumes, pure burn for the sake of burn.
There's not really anything in there to soothe, heal or moisturize like, say, Proraso or Speick would provide.

Different tools for different jobs.
