close shave under the chin

Hi there

How do i get a nice close shave under and around the bottom of the chin?
I seem to get good results on the side and front of my face and my neck, but really struggle getting a close pass under the chin - always have even when using cartride type razors for the last 16 years!

Cheers
Simon

That curve under the chin is a pretty tricky spot for lots of gents. I find the only way I can get a close shave there is to use a cart. I can go against the grain without irritation in that spot with a Trac II or a Sensor. With a DE, I always wind up with in-growns doing that.

Under the chin is a tricky area and I find that pulling or stretching the skin to flatten it out helps enormously.
+1 to that. My maneuver includes jutting my bottom jaw forward while my bottom lip goes up above my front teeth and tucks underneath my upper teeth. It's almost like an overbite if you can imagine that. Bonus points for trying to "smile" at the same time! I'll add that I look really stupid when I do it but it always does the trick and allows me to go ATG in that area very lightly with no irritation.

I've also historically had trouble in this area. The hair seems to grow very dense in this particular spot, so it is harder to remove. I am a two-pass shaver (1-wtg & 1-xtg). I do not shave ATG because it causes irritation for me personally. What I find works well for me in the under-the-chin area is to do a 2nd XTG pass. So, as I would with the rest of my face/neck, I do my WTG & XTG....but then sometimes (as my blade gets into day 3+ and starts losing effectiveness), I usually do a 2nd XTG pass on this area. When doing it, I make the direction of the shave a bit more agressive than my first XTG pass. It's not quite ATG, but it's about half way between an XTG & ATG if you can immagine that. I also do much smaller very light micro-strokes. This tends to get me a nice close shave (not BBS because i'm not going ATG), but quite smooth and comfortable.

I don't think there is any magic answer. It's just a matter of experimenting with your particular face, beard thickness, and shaving directions. If you try little twists in your technique every couple of days, you eventually find something that works better or worse than what you were previously doing and can build on it from there...

N-S and S-N are difficult for me, and S-N often draws blood. i seem to have the best results with multiple side to side touchup strokes.

the various skin stretching maneuvers help, also.

N-s s-n - what are they? I've got the wtg atg and xtg!

It's North to South- straight down, South to North - straight up without reference to grain although that may correspond to W-T-G and A-T-G in a particular area. I think the problem with my chin is that there's no grain. Each and every hair grows exactly perpendicular to the skin over a curved surface, or so it seems on my little patch of chin with its cute little dimple.

+1 exactly for me!

I myself have hair under the chin which mostly wants to grow to my right hand side. A few will want to dance to the beat of a different drummer. I just start out with the first pass at the tip of the chin and work straight down to the adam's apple.
Second pass, I go across the grain only on the chin, ( The neck for the most part, only gets 2 passes 1 with the grain, 1 against the grain ) Third pass, across the grain the other way, and Fourth pass against the grain as gently as possible. After the 4 passes in this trouble area, I put some more lather on the trouble areas and this particular area and buff until it is smooth. I rarely get it perfect, but if I can get it so that I can just barely feel it on the back of my hand I am satisfied.

Finally I am good for something LOL.

Here is what I do you should try it.... okay I do not stretch or anything in doing this. Get your chin nice and prepped preferably this should be don on the against the grain pass. I take the razor a Muhle R89 for me, handle side up and find an angle where the blade is flat against the part of you neck right before your chin. Now with no pressure deliberately pul said razor up and along the contour of your chin without changing the angle. It seems scary but trust me you will not get cut a straight taught for to do this well. It is scary at first but becomes normal after a while. I'd say experiment do not be afraid off ending up with irritation, its the only way to find what works because as you know YMMV
