I just bought a pair of antique/old men's hair brushes and am wondering how to go about cleaning them. They are some sort of quite stiff yellow/brown bristle, very closely/densely set in ebony handles, with a nice sterling silver victorian/art nouveau/art moderne device on the handles. The bristle I THINK is some kind of plant material, not animal hair.
The handles are stamped "Real Ebony France" on one side and on the other side, "E****NT*** Paris" with a picture of an elephant. I cant make out the rest of the letters in the name. (I have no idea how to do a search for a logo/trademark that is a picture. Text, I could try, but how do you find a hairbrush manufacturer who used a picture of an elephant?)
I imagine I could use shampoo to clean them and possibly some sort of barbicide to be sure of disinfecting them, but am concerned that soaking them would harm the wood, the bristles, or whatever glue is holding them. And anything shy of soaking them I just wouldn't trust to truly clean and disinfect them.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Thanks.
