Cleaning and oiling a Gillette

Hello, I have a quick question. The TTO doors on my razor are getting harder to open. Would it be ok if I used Pnuematic tool oil to lube it up? Just making sure it wouldn't harm the razor. Thanks in advance.

Try Ballistol oil. Not only is it safe on the skin, it was originally used by soldiers for tending wounds!

Your TTO mechanism is getting clogged up with hardening soap and crub. Soak the whole thing in hot soapy water, working the mechanism every so often until it loosens up. Don't oil your razor, it'll only collect grease and dirt and make things seize up even more.

I try not to lubricate my Gillette TTO's unless they really need it. In which case I apply a little mineral oil with a Q-Tip to the threaded post in the center of the blade tray. It seems to work fairly well. I am leery of using gun oil on razors due to the smell and the proximity to ones face. LOL.

Will the soap film just lube the doors anyway?

For a while. Eventually you get a buildup of soap that hardens into near-concrete consistency. Sometimes you'll get an old razor that has years of crud in it, takes days and days of soaking to break through enough to be usable again.

Stand it up on a paper towel and pour some paint thinner through it. Not paint remover, paint thinner. Don't oil the razor. Oil is guaranteed to gunk up a razor.

I soak mine. That seems to do the trick.

CLP is a lube used by the military that "Cleans, Protects, and Lubricates". I used it on my M16 in the Marines. It has a sweet, oily smell. But I'm not so sure I want that gunking up my razor.
