Clay pipes ?

So I have been thinking about a clay pipe, I love the churchwarden style and the clay ones seem very cheap compared to a briar pipe. What are the pro/cons of a clay pipe and what brands are the best?

They break super easy, but they are super easy to make, so that is why the cost is low. Another thing to look into is how long the stem will be because some are made longer than the length of some pipe cleaners so you would end up having to get a roll and cut then to size.

I love my clays. They're perfect for me, because I tend to smoke too fast, and I worry about damaging my cobs and briars. No problem with clays. I got mine from pipeshoppe.com.

I was reading that historically when your clay pipe was all stained and plugged and wouldn't draw they would stick them in a fire and it would burn them out and return them to white unstained clay.

thats actually kind of cool if it really works...so only real maintenance on it is to set it in the fireplace and forget about it....well that and not dropping it

I have one, and while I haven't used it a lot, it is my least preferred material. The draw is wide open, and for some reason the flavors are very muted. Get one if you like them, but I wouldn't put them in even the same league as a cob let alone briar or meer.

And don't set it on anything that melts easy right after you are done smoking it...

Well for the price I think it might be worth a try

I've got a few clays. one about 7 inches long that smokes pretty well and a 4 inch thing for quick 5 minute smokes at work. Good for trying new tobaccos without ghosting the pipe. The 7 inch gouda from pipeshoppe was my got to pipe for a while, I liked that it required basically no maintenance. Some times I'm too lazy to clean up a pipe after I'm done.
