Classic-scented balms

Hi, looking for some advice/suggestions.

I want to try some classic-scented aftershave, no ice fresh sport, or whatever...

However, I do feel I need a balm, not an alcohol splash. I am particularly interested in the bay rum...but have not seen that scent in a balm.

Any ideas?

C.O. Bigelow makes a Bay Rum balm which is quite nice.

Acqua di Parma's balm is excellent but rather expensive.

I'm sure QED has quite a few clasically scented balms as well.

The old style Nivea for Men Aftershave Replenishing Balm (Normal to Dry skin) has a great old world flannel type scent. (and works great for me)

If you can find it...
They recently changed the scent. Those boxes are marked as New Fragrance, and it's not anywhere near as good.

The old box looks like:

Just got the Bigelow Bay Rum Balm. I really like it. Soothing as a balm, and the scent is very interesting, pungent in a good way, sort of like Clubman but earthier. Bath and Bodyworks carries it, very limited availability in stores but it's available from B&B online and straight from the Bigelow site.

The Burt's Bees Bay Rum Balm is good, but a little piney to my nose. I think it's discontinued, but they seem to start and stop the bay rum products.

If you want classic drugstore, Afta Original is a pretty effective balm and it's available and cheap. The scent is soapy fresh but it doesn't hang around long on me.

I would recommend Nivea sensitive AS balm, L'Oreal or Proraso Balm. One of those should do it. Proraso being my favorite!

Nivea is an excellent quality/price product!

The Soap OPera in MadisonWisconsin has thier own brand of aftershave lotion and will add fragrance for free. I have the Bay RUm, Wood Spice, Oriental SPice. I've had them for a couple of years and the product has gotten a bit gritty, but still potent fragrance & still works as an aftershave.

burt's bees makes a bay rum balm. that should be available at most CVS/walgreens.

if you want a still classic but not bay rum scent there is a brut aftershave balm that does a great job.

Thanks for the advice, folks!

I have actually been using the L'Oreal product and I like the consistency quite well but am looking for some alternative scents.

I have been checking out the Shave Den products - they have a gazillion scent oils/combos they can add which is cool, and they sell samples. Does anyone know how this stuff compares to, e.g. the L'Oreal, in consistency?

Saint Charles Shave Bay Rum with a Twist aftershave milk is fantastic. I've found that the aftershave milks perform more like a balm than a splash.

I'm going to have to try the Brut A/S balm

yeah it works really well and smells great. the price is around $5 and you can pick it up pretty much anywhere.

i'd also recommend the CVS aftershave balm. it smells like a cross between brut and skin bracer. and works well.

there is also afta. that has a nice scent to it. just be careful because if you put too much on you'll definately enter the old man zone.

+1 to that! The Musgo Real balm feels awesome, works great (very soothing, healing), and has that killer Musgo scent. Very old school but doesn't shout "GRANDPA!".

Indeed!

Oh, and as for the OP's wish for a balm, not a splash, the Musgo Real splash is so full of face-healing goodness that it might be the one splash that makes you forego a balm!

You read my mind, lol...I was coming back to edit my post and mention that the alcohol based Musgo splash is fantastic. Yes, it contains alcohol, but IU've never had it burn no matter how bad my shave. I think the other awesome ingredients offset the drying qualities of the alcohol. I find this splash to leave a nice...I don't know..."residue", I guess...that layer of glycerine-y protection you're looking for, without any heaviness. Get some!

Splash ingredients:
Alcohol, Aqua (Water), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Extract), Perfume, Glycerin, PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium PCA, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel Extract), Echinacea Purpurea (Echinacea Extract), Bisabolol.

Balm ingredients:
Aqua, Sorbitol, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Caprylic/CapricTriglyceride, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Propyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Dulcis), Parfume, Butyrospermum Parkii, Xanthan Gum, Cera Alba, Buxus Chinensis, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Sorbitan Stearate, Sucrose Cocoate, Echinacea Purpurea, Althea Officinalis Extract, Squalane, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Allantoin, Benzyl Alcohol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone
