Chubby 3

Does anyone use the Simpson Chubby 3? If so, which grade of badger to you have it in: best, Super 3-Band, Super 2-Band? How do you like the brush? Is it a lather hog? Is it too huge? Thanks for any comments!

Ive owned it twice, both times in best badger....I sold it both times earlier in my introduction to this "hobby", the last time I owned one was maybe 3 years ago. It is rather large and I've considered buying another one but have managed to keep that in check. I didn't consider it a lather hog but rather a very luxurious brush.

I have a Chubby 3 in Super Badger 3-band. I love the brush, it is packed with just incredible much hair of the finest quality, the tips of my Chubby 3 is much softer than a 2-band Shavemac D01 I have. If you give it enough product you will get the most wonderful lather in gallons;) Perhaps the ultimate shaving brush if you like me enjoy large brushes. And this is a huge brush!

I have a Chubby 3 in Super three band (and a 2 in two band). I love the brush, but it is ridiculously big. I face lather and to use this beast, it is literally one pass from ear to ear and one on the neck. For most people who want a big brush I would suggest the size 2 as it is a large brush (mine is 27mm), but if you like the idea of lathering with the brawd side of a badger it is as good as it gets at size 3. I love mine, but many people do not enjoy brushes this big, so that one would be your call. The three band super hair is the third softest brush I have ever used, and by far the most dense. It feels more like a solid brick of soft than hair. You need to load it well, but with the density it rips soap off the puck. I would not call this a lather hog at all. Though I will preface that by saying I almost exclusively use big dense brushes, so my grounds for comparison are a bit squed.

For what its worth the 2 band Simpson hair is great. Tones of backbone and softness close to that of the 3 band super. Though you have to soak it to get it that soft. It is dense especially for 2 band, but as two band tappers it is not as dense as the 3 band super.

I have a Chubby 2 in Best that I am considering selling. I think I want to replace it with a Chubby 2 in Two-Band or perhaps a Chubby 3 in Two-Band. I am also looking at the Three-Band super brushes. How fragile are the Three-Band tips with respect to the Two-Band tips and Best tips. Thanks for the great posts guys.

Fragile? They all seem to be built with excellent quality and durability to me. Could you re-phrase the question?

The three band tips are softer and slightly more silky than the two band. I would consider the two band more of a cottony soft if thats what you are asking.

I am thinking of buying a Chubby 2,but I was kind of floored when I saw the price of them.
I think I will wait to see if I can find a sale of some sorts.

No joke, they are expensive. I got lucky and picked mine up while Vintage Blades still had one left in sock on closeout. Even then it was expensive. Then I was luck enough to find an exceptionally generous B&B member to sell me their used Chubby 3 for about what I got the close out 2 for.

I love them and would buy them both over, but I my wallet is still sobbing in the corner with PTSD from the price tag.

Here you can see a Chubby 3 in Super Badger and the bomb of premium Badger hair. The Tulip 3 and Emperor 2 looks like men without hair compared to a rock artist beside the Giant.

Thanks for the awesome picture. I am completely convinced that the CHubby 3 Super Three-Band is the most dense brush made today.

Knowing this, I think I am leaning towards Chubby 3 Super Two-Band, Chubby 2 Super Two-Band, or Chubby 2 Super Three-Band.

It is hard to find the Chubby 2 Two-Band right now.

I own a CH1 and CH2 both in two band super and they are both fantastic brushes. The knot on the CH1 is ideal for my preferences - the handle is a tad small but something I overlook easily.

The CH2, IMO, is an enormous brush. It's kind of ridiculous, actually, the amount of lather it spurns forth - enough for probably 10 passes, no joke... Feels great on the face, soft and pillowy, yet offering enough feedback to know you are face lathering. My CH2 is still fairly new, and I'd say it is a slight lather hog, but nothing of concern. The Simpson 2 bands tend to get better flow through with age.

If I had to choose one over the other it would be the CH1. It's all I need, really.

Given my experience of the CH2, I cannot even fathom how epic the CH3 must be. It has to be absolutely gigantic. It might just be a little too awesome for a simple guy like me:001_cool:

I have read that larger brushes require more product. How much more product would one of these larger brushes require? An almond sized portion, 1.5X the size of an almond, 2X the size of an almond?

CH2 probably takes 1.5x the size of an almond to really get it going for me. Not that much more product... but more.

Would the Chubby 2 be good for soaps and face lathering?I read that it is more suited for creams and that has got me worried because I am not needing a cream brush.

I am thinking I want the two-band for some reason.

IMO, the CH1 is better for face lathering, but the CH2 works fine also. Both work well with soaps or creams, but seem to be better than average with soaps. My experience is with the two bands only.

My Chubby 3 is a wonderful soap brush. I use soaps the most, and the Chubby 3 make the most wonderful lather for as many passes as you like. I could get 10 passes using the Chubby 3 and soap. To say this is not a soap brush is a joke imho. I think a two band Chubby 2 will be a fantastic soap brush and great for face lathering.
