Chubby 1 vs Chubby 2

Tell me all about them, please. I keep seeing the 2 bands vs the supers or the supers vs the best but never the best against the best (chubby 1 v chubby 2)

Or any of the grades for that matter.

My first question is the title.

My second question is how the 2 band compares to the rest?

And my third question is, is the super really worth it?

I'm looking at getting the chubby 1 and 2 and selling the one that doesn't suit me best (but oh how I wish my wallet were larger and said otherwise).

Thanks in advance!

I really can't help you but I have the chubby 3 in super and though people say it's a huge brush I've never understood that. it's a great brush and the super has the right combination of softness and scrubbyness. Mind you this is the older version pre vulfix.

I have a Chubby 2 in best and a TGN UK Silvertip 24mm knot (which, after using all the simpson's grades I honestly believe is the Chubby 1 knot in super, so take that as you will).

They are both great brushes. The simpson's best hair is really fabulous. My "Chubby 1" though I prefer slightly. It has the same density, backbone and scrubbiness although the tips are much softer.

Neither of them do I find the size too big and I only face lather with them.

I have a Grosvenor LE (Simpson 2-band), where this knot is quite a bit different than the others. Much more backbone and I would rate the softness b/w the best and super. It is much less dense though (by design) so I don't know how that would translate to a chubby as they are incredibly dense brushes.

Can't really go wrong with any of them.

I prefer the CH2 because I think the CH1 is far too small to be called a "Chubby"
I wrote a few posts about it in this thread:

And I would go for Best. It's cheaper and is really great! The Super is good too but maybe not enough so to warrant the price bump. Mostly cosmetic, methinks

If you still have both, could you stick em up next to a box of blades or a tweezerman?

You might not like either, one could be too big the other too small
(handle or knot). You should at least have an idea of the size of knot you prefer and how you intend to use it. A different model might actually be a better option for you.

I feel to obliged to get it from all the rave i'm hearing. I haven't used many brushes that i've liked..:

Semogue 620
Semogue 830
Art of shaving Pure
Tweezerman
Vulfix 23-24mm
Parker king 24mm
Omega boar
Omega Synthetic
The Body Shop Synthetic
VDH Boar

The only one i've genuinely LIKED is the parker silvertip I have and am using. It's also the only brush I have left that I didn't sell. But it too has quirks and i'm looking to get it off my hands soon too. The handle is a tid heavy for my taste.

I have the following brushes coming in (I didn't buy them new so don't pester me for spending so much):

-Duke 2
-Simpson special pure
-Rooney 3/1 Super

Looking to acquire:

-Chubby 1/2 Best
-Persian Jar 2 Best/Super
-Rooney 1/1 Super
-Rooney 3/1 Pure (I like a scrubber, medium scratchy brush)
-Shavemac #177 23
-Shavemac misc.

Thoughts?

Also looking in to penworks brushes and the simpson 2 bands. Any thoughts on those are welcome and requested.

Go look over at VintageBlades. They are dropping the Simpson line and have several models (PJ3, T1, T2) left in limited supply. They're selling at cost, free shipping and they're all 2-band super.

I didn't mean to sound obtuse it's just there are "knot equivalents" of Chubby's in the Simpson range that are also worth considering. A Duke 3 Best for example has same knot as CH1 Best but has a larger handle as is the Polo 10 Best compared to CH2 Best. If you bowl lather you may find these options preferable.

I understand your point. It was probably me for not picking it up earlier. I'm skeptical on the Duke 3 as i'm waiting on a duke 2 to arrive, and even then, i'll have 2 dukes and hear the chubby is still a different world.

As far as the polo is concerned, the prices look pretty steep. Am I looking in the wrong place?

No they are a little more pricier than Chubby's.

I'd definitely add a custom brush to that list, you can get one made in the "Chubby style" using an extra dense knot with a handle of your choosing and it will set you back a lot less.

If you decide you really want something even larger you can opt for a CH2

The Chubby was traditionally denser, ie a very different brush to other Simpsons in the same knot size. Not sure what Vlufix is doing in this way with the line.
