Choosing my next razor!

Hi,

Having switched from cartridges about 2 months ago I've been using the Goodfella DE with derby blades. Somehow I don't think I'll ever be going back. Problem is that now there is a lot of itches that need scratching (started with Omega shaving soap/creme, then purchased Tabac soap and now have Mitchell's wool fat on the way, started with a synthetic brush and now have a a decent badger and boar, both Omega) So my reason for switching (cheaper) hasn't worked out well so far!
After all that my question is, I would like to purchase another razor and want your thoughts on a good option. My technique seems ok (i.e. I haven't had any nicks/cuts and the alum block doesn't tend sting to much afterwards) and I can get a pretty good lather even if I create a hell of a mess in the bathroom. I would like something a touch more aggressive (I've added a shim to the goodfella as it seems a bit mild even when I nail the angle) and so far I think I'd like to make a decision from either the Muhle R41, Merkur 34c or 37c Slant. Any suggestions?

I suspect you need a bigger blade gap. Did you consider Merkur Futur? R41 also might be an option for you from what you describe.

The goodfella is super mild I think like a merkur 15c. I would not go to the extreme of an r41 but maybe a fatip or an vintage gillette old type or new type. I f you want closed comb a muhle r89 or EJ DE89 could be good, I would save the slant and the most aggressive ocs for a later purchase imo

Fair comment by Sean, i wouldnt jump to the R41 unless you commit to it.

Id tend to go for something more aggressive but friendlier such as the slant, or a Gillette New Long/Short Comb.

+1

The Goodfella was my second razor purchase, and to be honest if it had been my first razor I probably would have gone back to the cartridges, I just could not get a good shave with it, I was very disappointed as it's not a cheap razor.....ended up giving it to my brother (don't know how he finds it, but he has a Merkur 23c as well)

I'd go with the R89 or the EJ DE89 like Sean suggested, it will, IMO be a big step up in agressiveness from the Goodfella.

Have you considered the biggest gap, a straight, the ultimate razor? Glad to see the OP is enjoying his switch to DE.
