What's new

Chicago!

Well if all goes according to plan me and a couple of friends will be heading to chicago for spring break, wondering if my friends here at B&B knew of any fun things to do, or good places that you HAVE to eat at if you go to chicago (again the whole college student thing goes into effect but not so much) and of course, Shaving stores! i know of the truefitt and hill and am looking forward to that!

Be sure to check out Art of Shaving and Merz Apothecary downtown Chicago in the Macys. The Merz associates actually knew a lot about wetshaving and such.

I was just by Merz at Macy's the other day and it seems like they have added quite a few new items. They used to only carry some Meuhle Pinsel stuff, but I saw Kent and Simpson brushes and Merkur razors. They also have a good choice of Proraso products. Enjoy your trip!

Buddy Guys for Blues Music

Several Blues Brothers filming sites around. A buddy and I made a quick tour on our way out of town one day. Be sure to go in daytime hours.

Chicago river if your spring break happens to be the same weekend as St. Patricks day

Place to eat: Giordano's Chicago Deep Dish Pizza!

2nd that one. Not the most hyped pizza in town, but definitely the best, imo.

The museums aren't that expensive and you can probably get student discounts. Personally, I favor the Field Museum and the Art Institute, but the Shedd Aquarium has recently been updated and is supposed to be nice. The Museum of Science and Industry is pretty interesting as well, but there's just something about it that I never really liked (just not my cup of tea, I guess).

Don't forget to get a Chicago hot dog. Generally, the less clean and more run down the place is, the better the food.

Navy Pier tends to be a little touristy and the prices likely aren't great, but it's free to just walk around there and explore. There are all sorts of stores along Michigan Ave. and State St. There are a few gadget stores that have some ridiculous things that you can play with. You can always go up to the top of the Hancock Building or Sears Tower to get a pretty darn good view (assuming the weather cooperates). Millenium Park has some interesting art and is right in the heart of downtown.

That should give you a few days worth of things to do. Oh, and expect to pay taxes out your behind.

The grant park area is pretty cool: the museum of science and industry, shedd aquarium, and the observatory are all very fun experiences. And I took a skyline tour of chicago by boat that left from the pier by the Aquarium. That was an entertaining and fun side trip that wasn't too expensive. All of these are fairly touristy, but they are cool nonetheless and definitely worth the trip.

I would also recommend you catch a show at Second City.

Eat the deep dish pizza if you must (I'm not much of a fan), and Giordano's is pretty good. I used to like Pequod's on Clybourn for the not-so-deep pizza, but I haven't been there for a while. Burt's out in Morton Grove is supposed to be good and there's a Pequod's out there too. Avoid Uno--it's not really worth it.

Try to get some good Chicago hot dogs--Portillos is always reliable and Superdawgs is fun. Grab a burger at the Billy Goat Tavern on Michigan near the Wrigley Building.

The sightseeing spots people suggested are all good. If you go to the Museum of Science and Industry, you can go across 51st Street and see President Obama's house. You should also hit Medici's for lunch or the Woodlawn Tap for a drink at the world's smartest bar.

Check out the Irish pubs. There's lots of them and even the bad ones are pretty good.

Catch a show at Second City.

Are you a Narnia fan? You like the LOTR? Head out to Wheaton College in the burbs. They've got Tolkien and Lewis' writing desks, and they also have Lewis' wardrobe. Yes, that wardrobe.

It's Chicago, so you owe it to yourself to eat an enormous piece of meat. Several good steakhouses downtown. Ditka's isn't the best, but you might run into Iron Mike.

You and your buddies can find the spots that that young guys want to hang out--they're all lined up around Rush Street. I'll suggest Cafe Iberico if you want tapas and wine in a happy, crowded restaurant and bar.
