Celebrating One Month of DE Shaving

I celebrated my one month of DE Shaving today. Just finished a luxurious TGQ Cavendash Black from my vintage Badger Brush and EJ 89L. Finished with Clubman, Neroli Milk and a couple spritzes of CO Bigelow Black Cologne.

It was a wondrfully relaxing 30 minutes.

What I've learned for those noobs like me:

  • Gentle is Good. Better a DFS with no irritation than a BBS with loads of irritation
  • Don't go for a BBS until you really feel comfortable. My first BBS cost me and I didn't try for another until several shaves later. The second was much more enojoyable
  • If I get just a DFS it means I can shave sooner than a BBS that makes me wait two days!
  • Patience!! By being slow and enjoying the new experience, I found my hands naturally found the right angles
  • Finally, I didn't cut myself near as much as I figured I would. I think I got 4-5 minor nicks all this month.

This truly is an amazing "hobby" and lifestyle we've all chosen. I've taken a daily (or every-three day back then) chore and turned it into an experience that relaxes me, makes me feel better and truly makes me look better.

Sadly, I haven't avoided the ADs. I find I've got a case of RAD (though I still like the EJ best), ASAD and Cologne AD. I also find I'm smelling better these days--I hadn't worn a cologne since HS. Now, I've got a different one for every day of the week--and the wife loves it.

Good luck to those even more NOOBish than I. Have fun and enjoy the ride.

Congrats. I can relate to all you have said; nowadays every time I shave, I feel better. Being on this site will not help your AD but you will enjoy life a little bit more.

Congratulations on your first month and thanks for posting your advice to other neophytes. It's important for them to hear from others for any tips or tales of tribulations

That, my friend, is a truly inspiring narrative. I wet shaved until in my twenties. Then something wonderful (or so I thought) came along in canned shaving cream and thin, cranky little razors. For the next 40 years I actually migrated to shaving in the shower with bath soap while using a Gillette Trac II finally.
Then I found B&B through a pen pal and finally, have come to experience my morning shave just as you do. A small, daily ritual designed to pamper myself and turn a "have to" experience into a "want to" one. Even now I'm being amazed at how much different razor/blade combinations alter the equation. Brush/soap combinations play an important role too, much to my surprise. I'm having a load of fun with this new found hobby and even with my AD's raging out of control at the moment, I still haven't spent half of what my neighbor just dropped on a new driver for his golf impairment. Who knew this would be so much fun?
