CdG Wonderwood--thoughts?

I had ordered a sample from LuckScent.
Tried it the other day with much anticipation, and.... meh.

It certainly wasn't bad, but I thought with the description and other reviews I had read it would wow me over.
Initially, it read like many other scents. In what way I can't remember as it was about 1-2 weeks ago, but nothing to stand out. Then after about 10 minutes it changed to a nice pleasant and different, earthy~mossy scent, but that too went away within 20 more minutes and I was left with a decent, albeit typical, vetiver.
For the cost on the bottle I was hoping for something dramatically super about it. If I were to receive it as a gift I'd appreciate it, but I can't say I'd but a bottle for myself.
If they could extend that middle note I'd like it much more.

Sticking to Guerlain Vetiver for the time being...

I was a big fan of Gucci Rush, which seems to have become a real cult item, and this one reminds me a whole of Rush, with sweeter notes in the opening, at least. Because it is a bit different from Rush, I could wear this one more easily than Rush right now. I am not sorry I got a 10 ml decant. But it does seem sort of unexciting.

Part of the problem is that there are other scents that are sort of similar that I really like. If the sweet notes in this one were amplified, it might be more like MPG Santal Noble, which I just adore these days. If it were more austerely wood, as the publicity seemed to indicatet it wood be, it would be more like Rush, and say Tam Dao, and might be more interesting. As it is, it seems a little betwixt and between. Neither fish nor fowel. Essentially, I can think of scents like like better in whatever category one might want to place this one! It is not a bad scent. it just is not the best of its class in anything.

Did you watch the video? That actually made it seem like it would be more a pure wood scent, although it seemed to reference pine and/or balsam, and I sure do not get pine out of this scent. Some of the notes I have seen seem to talk about smokey notes that seem to involved incense notes. I suppose I get incense, but I get nothing that seems smokey.

The heck of it is that people like me and you were really drawn to the idea of a truly woody scent and still are. I wonder why CdG did not deliver on that promise. Or if if were not going to, decided to keep the name and the advertising pitch. I like CdG as a house.

Rob, are you looking for a smoky scent?

Not so much. I was just indicating how off to my nose so much of CdG's description of Wonderwood seems to be in multiple directions, not just what was hyped!

But what comes to your mind when you think "smokey," Boss? :001_smile I am up for anything that sweeps me off my feet, opens my doors of perception, or gives me a glimpse of Nirvana, :thumbup1:as CdG promised Wonderwood would do for me! If not expressly in words, through that video CdG put out!

There are couple that come to mind. Bvlgari Black and Body Kouros. I think Old Spice has a tint of smokiness.

Oh heck yes re Bvlgari Black! That is a scent that swept me off my feet, opened doors of perception to me, and gave me a glimpse of Nirvana! I know I should lose my stewardship of this forum over this, but I have never tried Kouros or Body Kouros. I understand they are different. And Kouros sounds right up my alley as a scent!

I completely agree that Old Spice has a delightful bit of smokiness to it. My guess is that a lot of the incensy type frags have incensey smokiness to them. I do not think I am looking for that particularly.

But the smokiness of Bvlgari Black is genius!

I received a decant of this today in the mail, opened it with great anticipation and...had much the same experience as you. I am sure it will grow on me, but I was expecting to be floored based on the descriptions. In my opinion, it does not live up to the hype. On the flipside, I was fortunate to purchase some CdG Kyoto on the BST from whitebar, and absolutely love it. The house does make some wood scents I enjoy.

+1 to all of this. After Hinoki, I figured this would be the holy grail, but was a little underwhelmed. The wife, however, really liked it on me (don't know how I'm going to get around the price tag...)

So far, my sacred hall-of-fame woods scents are Cade, Hinoki, Gucci PH, Etro Sandalo, AOS Sandalwood......any I'm missing? Any scents a woods freak has to have?

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:...wonderwood!

Now has an arch nemesis:

As an FYI, Kouros and Body Kouros are vastly different scents. As near as I can tell, they only called it Body Kouros to cash in on the "Kouros" name. I find nothing whatsoever related between the two scents.

I have read someone try to make the point that the philosphy of the notes structure was similar between the two (whatever that means), but they do not smell remotely similar.

Sorry if I offended anyone there, I know this is a serious discussion. By chance is this stuff anything like D.R. Harris' Marlborough AS? I really like woodsy scents, and I like Marlborough, but it doesn't seem to project well if that makes any sense. Maybe because it is such a raw woodsy scent they couldn't make it much stronger without it being obnoxious? In short, I'm looking for something new that might project better than Harris.

I am the OP on this thread and I would not consider it a serious discussion! :thumbup1: You sure as heck have not offended me, and I am confused as to why you would feel you might have offended anyone. Your comments and funny or unfunny posts are equally welcome, wolfmanxiii!

I personally do not know DR Harris Marlborough at all, and I realize is it a regrettable gap in my knowledge. Someone here should have some more educated comments than mine, but my overall impression is that DR Harris scents tend to be British and restrainted, and so they are not trying for big projection. I suspect that Wonderwood projects more than Marlborough, but that is also different in many other respects that Marlborough, too.

DR Harris Marlborough is too strong for me too. It makes me noxious after a while. Try Santa Maria Novella Eva. It projects well without being noxious.

I didn't think DRH Marlborough was too similar. Marlborough is pretty much cedar, sandalwood, and smoke--like if you spent most of the night in a smoky bar and the next day smelled your shirt. I don't know why I like it, but I do.

Wow, thanks guys for the responses. I was just concerned when I posted that figuring I had stepped into a serious conversation and turned it quite juvenile. The male enhancement thing is quite funny though BTW.

I will definitely have to keep talking to you guys though, I really do like woodsy smells and as for the smoky smell I actually don't mind that. I wish they made a cologne or AS or any shave/scent product at that which smells like a good campfire. You know like when you've been out camping and stuff and the way your clothes and hair smell the next day. That's why I love Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap so much!

<I wish they made a cologne or AS or any shave/scent product at that which smells like a good campfire. >

Careful what you wish for! Are burning leaving and/or the smell of a fireplace close enough? They sure have those!

More later when I have a chance to look some things up!

Juvenile works around here by the way. If we laugh one in say ten jokes someone comes up with we tend to forgive anything. This stuff is for fun, not work. Does not mean things will not be learned and good information exchanged.

Fireplace might work...I wouldn't know personally though. It's just one of those smells that reminds me of good, fun times I guess.

Demeter "Fireplace" cologne

Sonoma Scent Studio "Fireside" and "Fireside Intense"

CB I Hate Perfume "Burning Leaves"

I have only had the last one and the regular "Fireside" but I think among these may be what you are looking for!

Good luck and have fun with it!
