Cavanagh fedora?

Saturday I stopped with my wife at an antique shop to kill some time before an appointment.

While rooting around, I opened a hat box and found a gray Cavanagh fedora in my size. I didn't know enough at the time to see if it was a Cavanagh Edge, but since have learned these are very good hats.

It would need to be cleaned, I think, and perhaps re-blocked. There is a white line around the bottom of the brim about midway which I gather was from storage in a hat box. The crown (diamond) seems a bit unconstructed, soft edges and the pinches not centered, off just a bit to my eye, but examination was quick. It did look good on me if I do say so. I didn't notice any moth damage, but I would give it a very good inspection if I decided to purchase.

The hat itself didn't have a price. The box had a price of $50. I don't recall if the box is Cavanagh. The box and hat may be $50, or who knows? Prices are negotiable and the more I know the better.

Any way, I'm not knowledgeable regarding vintage hats and what it may cost to have them cleaned and re-blocked or even if it would be advisable to do.

I have been wearing hats for about 15 years and have but a modern black winter felt and a straw summer that I wear with any regularity. I also have an olive Beaver I purchased in Memphis and a sea grass that belonged to my father that I wear to hunting camp or fishing. The first everyday black hat is an outback style and I think the straw summer could be termed a Safari.

I know I can obtain additional information from the Fedora Lounge, and I've seen the thread on the Cavanagh Edge there. But those guys are enablers and I'd like an honest opinion with the limited information I can provide right now to see if I should go back and check this hat out with more time available. So, what do ya think?

Hello John, I wish that I could help you but I am like you kind of new to the fedora world. I would think however that if this hat is in the condition you state, I would diffidently talk them down on the price. The other day, I found a Dobbs fur felt fedora at a church yard sale with a price of $5.00....to bad it didn't fit.
I do know that you can have a hat reconditioned, but it could cost you another $50.00 or more.

IMHO, I would keep looking for a hat in better condition. Unless, you just have to have it, then it would be worth what ever you pay.
