Causes of chips on straight razors?

How hard is it to break one? I mean, do they chip very easily? Havent chipped one myself yet, knock on wood.

A full hollow can chip really easy if dinged. Like in very easy, just a tap on the faucet can do it.
That is why many use a towel or sponge & wipe instead of rinsing.

I fixed a chip for a new shaver who damaged his razor on the handle of a loom strop. If you hit anything metal with even moderate force the edge can chip.

Its easy to chip a blade. If you drop a straight razor, especially if its a full hollow, you're likely to mourn its loss.

Stainless shatters more easily than carbon steel, but either way if you drop it, it most likely marks the end of service life for that particular blade.
