What's new

Caswell-Massey loose knot

I bought a Caswell-Massey brush off eBay several months ago. The original box label says "Pewter Shave Brush Badger." The shiny handle has "Caswell-Massey" on one side and "Super Badger Handmade in England" on the other.

The knot turns. It doesn't wiggle. It turns. I only noticed this yesterday because I thought it was time to begin using it. It seems new otherwise.

I am contacting C-M to see if they will warranty it, but their web site says that they take returns for only sixty days after the sale.

So, if I have to fix this myself, where do I start? Is there anyone on this list that does this work for a fee? Or is there a simple solution?

Thanks for your help.

Doug

You could try twisting the knot gently to see if you can pop it out...if so a tough of epoxy would set it right.

Rudy Vey does restorations here if you do not want to try this.

I have a shaving brush with a pewter handle and when I replaced the old knot with a silvertip knot from Golden Nib I found the handle had a plastic liner. The new knot started to turn a few months ago and I suspect it is the plastic liner that is rotating as the knot is still glued tightly. If a plastic liner is a standard feature in pewter handles then you may be having the same experience. I don't find it a problem so I'm not going to do anything in case I damage the knot.

I phoned Rudy Vey on Tuesday, 18 May. We talked for about 15 minutes. He is a very knowledgeable man, a good professional from what I gather from his comments and his web site.

I am sending him the Caswell-Massey brush for him to look over. He has the time and knowledge to get into something that I don't have.

And I'm ordering a brush from him. I like the way he thinks about his work and his products.

Good call, Rudy will set this one right for you and you will enjoy whatever you decide to buy from him too.

I just received an e-mail from Rudy Vey. He used a syringe and a small-ish needle to inject epoxy between the lip of the handle and the edge of the knot. It seem to have solved the problem.

I am now in the process of deciding on the details of a new Badger brush. I am very impressed with his competence and professionalism.

Thanks to those who helped me find him.

So, here's the end of the matter.

I received two brushes from him today, the C-M and one that I ordered. It is Boxelder Burl, stabilized. I am very impressed with his professional work and his excellent communication. Here's his work.

A big thank you to Schwert for sending me in his direction. I am more than satisfied.
