Cased Vintage Genuine Thuringian

Today I got my new thuringian in the mail. It comes in a box and the stone is secure in the box. Do most of you use yours in the box or remove it somehow. The box shows some age which is expected and I don't really want to subject it to getting wet while I hone so I'm thinking about taking it out of the box. If anyone has a safe method please let me know. I also want to lacquer the label to preserve it and was thinking about using clear nail polish. The stone may look a little rough in the pictures because it still needs to be lapped. I have dmt coming tomorrow that ill use to lap it.

what are the stones dimensions?

The dimensions of the stone itself are 4 7/8 x 15/16 . I don't know how thick because it is glued in the box. Is there any way to safely take it out of the box without destroying it.

All you need is enough water to lubricate or slurry so it shouldn't be soaking the box. At that size the box is good because it gives you something to hold with your fingers out of harms way.

Thanks Gamma. I dont have a problem using and storing it in the box but it needs to be lapped and the box is in the way. I need a way to either remove the stone from the box or take the top half of the box off. Any suggestions.

I've read that putting it in an oven on the lowest setting for a while will soften the glue.
Once the stone was out I'd probably let it cool off in the oven on tin foil.
Once cool - lap away.

After nearly 2 hours in the oven progressively moving from 190 - 250 degrees and a lot of careful prying with my Swiss Army knife I have finally gotten it out of the box and I managed to keep the box in one piece. Thanks again for the help. The glue or whatever they use on these things is ridiculously strong and some of the bottom skin of the stone stayed in the box but it is mostly intact. $image.jpg

I thought about it but i wanted to keep the box intact. Later on today ill hone on it and ill probably put it in the box or my off hand when I hone. I will have to see which is more comfortable for me.

Excellent!

I've always preferred those little hones to be out of the box. While I love those cases, I hated honing with the stone in it.

It looks like you lost a minimal amount of stone too - and the box is still intact. Nice.

Ya thanks. I kept getting nervous because the glue cracking sounds like the box breaking so I wasn't sure if I was making progress or just breaking the box and then all at once the stone broke free and I relieved. I have already lapped it and used it. It took one of my coticule edges to another level and it seems pretty easy to use compared to what I've been used to. I liked the shave so much that I bought another off of eBay because I like bigger razors and think ill have a problem with such a small stone but I plan on holding on to both right now. Mine looks almost like a light blue but the slurry on paper towel trick I read somewhere dried pure grey. The new stone which I should have soon is advertised as a blue green stone.

I just scored one of these on the bay for 30E. What a friggin' steal! Guys like Neal Miller are trying to sell them on their website for over 100E.

Looks to be a lighter colored stone than yours. As far as I know all that means is that it's probably faster but not a finer finisher.

The little ones are great to travel with, or to slurry a bigger one with.

Ya I paid 39 euros but with shipping it was more like 50 euros. Is yours still glued to the box or is it removable.

I haven't received mine yet but either way looks like we both scored here!!!! These are proven finishers. If you haven't used a thin hone yet, it'll take a little to get used to but it's not hard by any means.
