Can't get over BAY RUM

I just love the smell of a good, rich bay rum. Most of these products are rather pricey but I found a nice one on ebay recently: PINAUD CLUBMAN VIRGIN ISLAND BAY RUM-12 oz. for $8.99 plus $3.99 shipping. It has a nice spicy, warm scent very classic and mellow...lasts 2-3 hours. I have not found a lot of sources here locally in Anchorage, Alaska. I would appreciate some other recommendations on Bay Rums that make you happy.
Thanks,
Major T

I'm a Captain's Choice guy. Converted by a forum brother, here. I don't know why I resisted...
But I like other Bay Rums a bunch. None are my ideal... some get closer than others. I have the ingredients for "Bootlegger's", which is, I think, a brilliant idea. We'll see how it goes -- just got an apothecary bottle to mix the three separate Bay Rums into. I'll probably put that together tomorrow. I need to find a small funnel first.

Meantime, for scent and performance, Captain's Choice. And if razor-burn is an issue, for performance I like Krampert's. It's moisturizing and soothing on another level. Even if the scent is bit clove heavy for me. (Certainly nowhere near as much as the Pinaud's!)
(Note: I just got an email today that suggested two drops of jojoba oil in the Captain's... increases the soothing/healing without interfering with scent. But I haven't tried that yet. Genius idea, again).

I just mixed some Bootlegger's up. Really a fine thing (though I think the individual Bay Rums are also fine things -- the Superior 70 has the most "Bay" scent, actually -- though it's basically bay-flavored rubbing alcohol; I got the Master's with the green label, and the glycerin feels great. And the Pinaud turns out to have clove, but I think not to be the clove bomb I thought it was purported to be, though I don't smell much in common with other bay rums, either).

That said... It turns out to be a very good price for what it is, especially if you can find the items without having to pay exorbitant postage... but I personally don't think it holds a candle to the Captain's. Once again, that to me isn't perfect, but... it's closest to perfect, for my tastes. YMMV. After the Captain's I also really love Em's, Krampert's, Gilbert Henry, and the Dominica (with Lime in that case). All more expensive, but all better, to me, than the Bootlegger's, finally. I understand this is thoroughly subjective.

I bought a corked apothecary bottle to mix up my Bootlegger's. It's a cool thing. I will definitely use the bootlegger's -- I mixed up over 8 oz... which turns out to be alot of aftershave. So I better use it!

Next one I'm curious about is Honeybee Gardens, just because I've read positive things on these forums; the ingredients are good for the "all natural" crowd; and it's also inexpensive - $5 or $6 bucks for 4 oz.

And the other one I want to try is Cobra Spit. Because the name is cool, the label is cool.... but they charge exorbitant shipping on what appears to be a well-priced product. That's what's stopped me from pulling the trigger. Anybody here actually use Cobra Spit??

And what's up with that Gabel's stuff, that comes cheap in gallon jugs?

I tried Pinaud Bay Rum for the first time on Friday, what I experience was an immediate scorching of my face (which died down quickly but caught me off guard) and a too-strong-for-me clove scent. This morning I decided to modify the Pinaud by mixing approximately 2 oz Bay Rum with 2 oz witch hazel and a few drops each of orange essential oil and glycerine. A small splash applied to my face resulted in less burn, a better feel afterwards and a much more agreeable scent. I definitely like the Bay Rum scent though, especially for this time of the year and plan on expanding my horizons in the near future.

I blend Pinaud and Master bay rum in my hand and apply the combo. Did it again for today's shave.

I call it PinMaster bay rum. You get the BEST of both scents and it is not as brutally stingy as each on their own

ok, it looks like I need to buy a bottle of Superior 70 BR

If you are interested in making Bootlegger's Bay Rum but can't seem to find Superior 70 in your local Walgreens. There are several reasons, and I may be able to assist you with some information:

1. They may not sell it in your region.

2. They do sell it, but you won't find it on the shave isle next to the Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum.

3. If it is at your local Walgreens, it will be on the 'Ethnic Isle' where they market hair care and other products to the Hispanic/Latino community.

4. If you find Walgreens doesn't sell it in your State's region, Talk to the Manager of your Walgreens. Ask them to personally order you some and they will do it. When they get it in they will call you and it won't cost you any shipping.

5. Until then, send me your mailing address and I will PIF you a sample of Bootlegger's Bay Rum. :)

At some point I'm going to have to track down the ingredients for this bootleggers....i love bay rum......never smelled any of the three yet! Sounds very interesting...

I have never heard of bay rum (and thus never smelled it) until I got in here... I really want to try it. I haven't seen it anywhere though. What is this that they may have at Walgreens?

I too want to compare the Bootleggers to Captain's Choice, but have only been able to find Masters in my area. I know I can find the other two (Pianud's and Superior 70?) online, but I guess there's just something about finding it "in the wild" :)

Captains Choice, Pinaud V.I., Masters and Ogallalla. You will not go wrong with Captains Choice price and scent wise.

You're spot on with no 1, theres no Superior 70 BR in my region, in fact there's no Bay Rum of any sort here in Singapore. I got my Bay Rums online and they cost me 2 to 3 times more due to shipping. It's even harder for me to acquire them bec aftershaves are prohibited items by air from the US. But I have this thing for aftershaves.....SWMBO isnt too happy that I have 30 bottles of aftershaves and she has 6 bottles of perfume but now I have an excuse to get one more lol. I thank you for your kind offer sir but I think I am able to get a bottle of this Superior 70 online, likewise if there's any aftershave that you seek that isnt available in your region, just let me know...if it's in the local stores here, I'll send it to you, cheers!

LOL. You and I are in the same boat. SWMBO asks me almost every day if I realized that I own 47 bottles of aftershave/colognes! :)
