Canon G15 and Infrared Photography

Can the Canon G15 take infrared photos with the proper filter attached? I'm thinking of selling my Nikon D40, grip and lenses to move to Canon for it's compact size and versatility.

As standard the g15 will only capture the visible spectrum. You can, however, hack the camera, and it will then see from about 340mn to 1100nm. I'm not sure exactly how that is done, but I do know of at least one place who will do it for you, though they charge between $275-$375. That price makes me think it needs the sensor changed, rather than just some firmwear hack.

Yeah, I'm not going to hack it, but was hoping to just be able to stick an infrared filter on the lens and take pics.

No, the filter on those cameras is very strong.

I had an inexpensive PowerShot converted to IR ... most fun I had in a long time with a camera!

That's great. I use to love shooting IR in the film days. How did you do the conversion?

I sent the camera to a specialist in the UK. He removed the low pass filter, and put an IR filter (720nm) in front of the sensor. So it can only shoot IR now.

Doh! I was hoping it was something I could do myself. I have unlimited access to cheap cameras. IR filters that fit internally... nooo.

I've seen some DIY hacks on the internet...I'll try to find them. It might be more difficult depending on the camera.

I have an old P&S I'd love to do this to also.

Mike - to your question. No, its it not possible to get one of the nearly opaque infrared filters like you would use with film. A digital camera's sensor is sensitive to a much wider range of the electromagnetic spectrum than just visible light. They put filters over the sensors to combat this
