Canned Goo - A Confession

So, this morning I was running late, and realized I needed to shave (pun intended) some time off of my usual routine. I had two options:

1. Use a good soap and a cartridge razor, needing only one pass with massive buffing; or

2. Use canned goo (edge gel) and my DE razor, needing two passes but no latering and no cleanup of bowl/brush.

I opted for #2. And....I must admit......the canned goo did ok with the DE. A borderline DFS.

I will certainly clense my soul in the morning with a full Tabac shave, but I must admit, in a pinch, Edge gel is passable.

With good technique I'm not at all surprised that the canned goo stood up to the mark. It'll do the job no doubt. There's just a lot less sensory fulfilment in the doing - and the notion of tossing empty can after can into a landfill of course should offend the senses. But on an occasional basis in your hour of need. - no harm done !

p.s. that's a pretty good penance you've set yourself ! Enjoy !!

Mixed soap in the 70's and 80's, then Noxzema w/aloe till 3 years ago. Never had the brush problem. Start with brush and hot water, massaging face several times to get things going. Then mix soap and wet shave. Start wet!!!

Of course, as any lubricant would probably work, in a pinch. No sham with that when you need to do what you need to do.

I have a can of barbasol yellow on my counter at all times now, green or yellow actually, both are fantastic canned lather imo. The edge gels, i never did care much for, i always opted for the lather style. Whatever works for you, is what is important.

When I'm in a rush I use Kiss My Face. Fastest way to get a 3 pass shave, 5min or less. And as good as any premium shave soap/cream

i have used canned stuff when traveling for a few days, i dont think i would go back to it full time, my son though uses it all the time, i gave him a wilkinson sword classic, brush and some shaving cream, the only thing he uses all the time is the brush with canned gel, he goes between the de razor and a mach 3, speed is everything for these young uns, a fast shave and out the door.

Wow, the face sure let me know it was NOT happy at the return to Edge gel. It is just too oily and harsh for my skin. By last night, I had irritation in all of the spots (neck, upper cheek) I used to have before I switched to the DE world.

Tabac this morning, followed by witch hazel splash. Things are returning to normal.

Ain't nuthin wrong with the can. With decent prep and a little massaging, you can get good shave from the can.

...and when you do go back to the ol' brush & soap, it feels all the more luxurious!

I used Barbersol for almost 20 years until this place converted me. I used it in a rush a few weeks back and my skin rebelled. I looked like I had sun burn but only on my beard area until lunch. Needless to say, but I won't do that again. Gels were always good to me though.

We are moving in a few days and I have all of my shave gear packed away except for
an EJ DE86, a pack of Derbys and a travel can of Edge.

Edge works just fine. I will even go as far to say that the shaves are comparable to
a lather made with a brush and good quality soap or cream.
It is not a luxurious, but it definitely gets the job done.

I was an Edge guy until I converted to making my own lather. I used to use a wet brush to apply the Edge, but it is not the same experience. I discovered one VDH soap could last me 3 months, and the shave is so much better. Now I have four soaps I rotate through. So much better than the goo.

When I'm in a time crunch, I prefer to keep higher quality items on standby. Life is too short for antifreeze-colored gel.

I have just got into DE shaving, so still have a can or two of goo to use, so I guess it will get used one day but not sure it will be because I'm short of time.

I always and need to wet and leave my beard to soak for about a minute, which gives me plenty time to lather some soap, I have found Palmolive face lathers very easily, not tried hand lathering yet but expect that too, with a good soap, can be lathered very quickly, so no bowl to rinse, and for me at least, it only takes 15 seconds to rinse the brush (the bowl even less time, for that matter) but if you thought the goo saved you time, then fair enough.
