Can someone give me some idea of the value of these straights? (pic heavy)

I have 3 straights here and I am hoping that someone can give me some idea about the value of these razors if I were to sell them.

First let me explain why.... I have two issues that are totally beyond my control that make shaving with a straight all but impossible.

1. My beard is probably the toughest hair anyone has ever seen. I find most new DE blades tug and pull and hurt to shave with them. Its like using a 3 week old blade. Yes I do a good hot shower and wash my face and let the hot water run on my face and neck for at least 15 to 20 minutes before I get out of the shower. I lather my face and let it sit for a few minutes before I shave and all this does little to soften my beard. Having my straights honed to a scary sharp edge helped a lot and would have worked great except for......

2. This is probably the biggest problem, I have Ulner nerve entrapment of the left hand which is my dominant hand. That means the nerve that runs down your arm and behind your elbow (the funny bone) and down to the hand. This nerve controls the hand and when it is pinched most of the time it makes the outside half of the hand numb and limits some of the fine motor control of the whole hand.

Even with this I have always been able to think my way through how to make my hand do the things I need to do and make things work.

This has not been the case with straight shaving :crying:  I did not realize how much feedback you need to get from your hand to shave with a straight. With out a sense of feeling and some of the fine motor control gone it is all but impossible to shave without doing some permanent damage to yourself :scared: This has been very frustrating for me.

Here are my 3 razors..(all are shave ready)

first is a henckels 4/8 shorty (it was like that when I got it). It has some minor pitting on the tang as you will see in the photos and a small spot on the face of the blade but nothing that is anywhere near the edge. It also looks like fine sanding lines that will most definitely polish out. The tip also looks like it was probably dinged and was ground off.

Next is a henckels Friodur 5/8 This razor is for all intents and purpose new. it was used once by me as far as I know no one else has ever used it.

The last one is a Bengall 6/8 I will post photos of this one in a new thread as this one is already too bogged down with photos already. The box with it is not for this razor but it came with it so I use it.

Post them in the BST for what you think is a fair price, or list them on Ebay and let the market decide. They look nice. I like that Friodur particularly.

That is why I was asking here because I don't have a good idea about what a fair price is for any of these is.

I have seen paid prices of anywhere from $35.00 to 185.00 for a friodur in the same condition as mine so thats no help.

Now I know the other 2 razors are whatever someone is willing to pay for them based on individual interests.

I am only looking for educated guesses as I know its all about what someone is interested in and how much they want it.

If you are looking to just let them go you could always sell them for what you paid plus shipping fees.

I will second that Friodur is nice and a quick ebay search on completed listings shows the 5/8 sizes anywhere from 70 to 125 that have sold recently.

pricing is always a subjective subject with items like these though.

Edit: as far as beard softening have you tried using conditioner in it while you shower? I found that helped a lot when I was having some tugging issues with both straight and DE blades.

Believe me I have tried every trick in the book to soften my beard hair... when I was a kid and I would have shots for something or other the nurses gave me the nick name of rhino hide because my skin was so tough they kept bending needles while trying to give me the shot. (hair is made of the same keratin cells as the top layer of your skin) the hair cells are just arranged a bit differently to form the long strands instead of the flat layer of skin.

As I said I am just trying to get a snapshot of what price people think is good today as I know tomorrow will be different and what sold yesterday for 200 tomorrow will sell for 25  and things yesterday that no one would even look at suddenly are worth outrageous amounts :w00t:  my only solid shot is the Friodur and I know that is on many peoples want list :w00t: :w00t:

I'm NOT saying that you're guilty of this, but in general these kinds of questions smack a little of profiteering and don't fit into the mold of the BST. If you're looking to maximize your return, eBay is the way to go. On the BST, just ask for a fair price and it'll either sell or it won't.

if I sold them all for 2 cents I would be making a profit.... these razors were given to me about 7 years ago by a friend. I did not pay anything for them so I don't have any idea how much they cost new or otherwise and that is the only reason I am asking about the value in general so I can have some idea what a realistic price to ask is. so take your profiteering comments somewhere else. And when I do sell them on the BST I will be sure not to sell them to you so I won't offend your sense of morality. :glare:

I am asking a respectable question and I expect to get respectable answers from people whom I have great respect for because I find they far more knowledge than I do regarding these things. So rather than insult their intelligence and post the razors in the BST with some outrageous price I am asking their expert opinion on what a realist value is for them. :thumbup1:

Thank you to all of you who have already or will offer some feedback to my question.

...... though I did preface my comments by pointing out I wasn't talking about you personally, but rather giving some guidance on how the question would be viewed w/i the B+B community.

Throw 'em up on eBay with a starting bid of One Red Cent and let 'er rip! It will be more fun than a Green Acres Marathon featuring Mr. Haney, and you'll get your answer. Since you've got nothing in them, why not just have fun doing it?

+1 for ebay. Since you are unsure of their value and you wish to get rid of them at a good price for you, that is the right place to list them.

As the others have stated. Put them up on the bay.
Put a low starting price, between 0.01 and 9.99 and put as many high. res pics as you can (both sides, front, back, angled...anything you can think of).
Most of the time it will end higher then you think.
The Friodur & Bengall should go for a fair price. The 4/8 twinworks will depend on who's looking.
Good luck.

Bengals restored to almost new including rescaled, though great shavers don't fetch what they can be worth. If I were to buy it I can restore it completely myself but if someone was sending it out for polish, scales, and honing that is going to be somewhere in the $120+ (very fair estimation). That should give you a good idea of where the price on that Bengal would be because it needs some work and likely lose the etching but they are one of my favorite shavers. That's why you see a lot of beautiful restored razors that don't sell as fast because the seller is trying to recup the investment and may not even be attempting to profit.

I'm a Henckles fan, not a Friodor fan. Weird I know. 4/8 size you're already going to be way below what a 5/8 Henckles would be just because of the size (size matter remember:glare:). If you look at Filis that are 4/8 they sell NOS that I've seen somewhere in the $100+, the market isn't there for it because of the size. Now me personally I love Henckles and that razor looks like it should clean up very nicely in the hands of someone that knows how to use a dremel and can live with some blemishes.

The Friodur.........I have never purchased one but that looks like a very nice blade that is ready to go right out of the box after a honing. Check the bay prices of what you find.

If you put them on BST they will sell, those are some very nice razors.

This is all just my .02

let me first thank everyone that has given me a little insight on the value of the razors...

Now let me add something here that I should have said in the beginning but didn't think of it earlier...

I am trying to get an idea of the value not for the purpose of selling them outright... I wanted to get some idea of their value so I would know what I could realistically trade them for. I know now that the bengall razor, although popular with some people and is considered to be a great shaver by those people it doesn't have much value so I could realistically could trade it for a MWF in the ceramic bowl but could not trade it for a nice badger brush, but the friodur does have good value and would trade for a decent badger brush and maybe even a tube of Proraso soap to boot.

The little 4/8 henckel I might even be able to trade for a couple of big packs of DE blades.

So that is why I am asking about the value of the razors... I love them but I can't use them due to no feeling in my dominant hand  So rather than let them sit here and collect dust I wanted to find good homes for them with the good people here in B&B  I know they will be well taken care of and they will make someone truly happy.

Oh and I know I have already said this several times, but I will say it again .... All these razors were just honed by a B&B honemiester that has a very good reputation for his awesome honing skills. The razors were only used 1 time by me so they would need only to be stropped and then they are ready to use.
