What's new

Can one who uses an SE excusively please tell me the shave I just had isn't typical?

Because...

Well, let me think of how I want to say this...

It was... THE. BEST. DAMNED.SHAVE. OF. MY. LIFE.

And you'd think I'd be happy about that. Problem is, I have a large collection of DEs. I have lots of money sank into the hobby. And here, tonight, I had the best shave ever, of all-time, with a GEM 1912 that I think I paid $8 for. Why don't these things get more love? I didn't even shave carefully. I hacked at my face like I was holding a Mach 3. I made too many passes over the same area. I went ATG everywhere. I didn't receive so much as one weeper, and I even tested the quality of the shave with the notorious face torcher that is Ogalalla Bay Rum Limes and Peppercorn. It felt as innocuous as tap water on my face.

My SE gives me an incredibly good shave too. Better than my DE's. I feel like they cut TOO close though.. aftershave burns like crazy after a SE shave over a DE shave.

Also, the heads seem harder to maneuver and blades are less available--par to injectors

I've only been using my GEM 1912 for a couple of weeks but it's been a great two weeks. Best shave I've had in a while.

Ha! You just had that "face-palm" moment when you realised that now you are going to have to start stockpiling a different blade for Shaveaggedon.

Been there.

I love MANY of my DE's but, if I could start again, knowing what I know now, I would probably just buy a good straight and a Gem 1912 for rush days. But, I suppose, the collecting is half the fun.

I didn't experience that, thankfully. I got some SE blades PIF'd to me by David in Boston, and he said as well that his SE shaves started out wonderfully but his face began to not react well after a few shaves. I hope to God that doesn't happen to me, because I'm not exaggerating - I've never had such a wonderful shave as I just did twenty minutes ago.

I'm with you, though after four consecutive days on my first week with the 1912, my skin felt like it was getting a bit raw. The 40's SS with a Red IP was a great way to take a time out. :thumbup1:

When I was first experimenting with SE, I couldn't go more than about a week before changing out to a mild DE. But that will change with time. Now, I might go only 2-3 non SE shaves per month, and just so my DE razors don't feel too left out.

I'm in the same club. I had acquired 28 DEs by the time I had my first SE shave. Now I shave exclusively with a micromatic or a 1912.

I think that they are less forgiving of mistakes and carelessness, but more forgiving of poor technique, that is to say, if you aren't proficient in every area of shaving, the SEs will give you a closer shave than you would get with a DE.

Welcome to the newest Gemocrat. My DE's have been gathering dust for the last 4 months. Straights 3 times a week, with the rest of the days filled with Gems and injectors.... sometimes a pass with a injector and 2 with a Gem..... Love the SE's

My SE shaves are great. They're probably 60% of my shaves, with 20% each for injectors and DE's, respectively. I had some trouble at first shaving my moustache area (I have a bit of a prominent nose:tongue_sm), but since I figured out a way to get BBS there, most every shave has been spectacular:wink2:. I do sometimes get irritation on the neck when I have a careless shave after about a week of SE shaving, but one dose of Nivea takes care of it for about 2 weeks after:001_smile. NOTHING gets rid of the stubborn hairs on my chin like a SE, and the proof is in the sink after the first pass.:thumbup1:

You must not have been paying attention to several of mine and other members recent posts about how good the SE shave is.:tongue_sm After just one shave with a Gem 1912 I began acquiring these SE's.

Sounds just about right, welcome to the club.

David,

I was the same after the first shave with my Ever-Ready.

I normally shave with a straight, but this Ever-Ready was the first razor in a very long while that made me say WOW !!

Absolutely stunning shaves :001_smile

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ

I'm almost exclusively an SE shaver. I still work a DE 89L into the rotation but I often find myself asking why? . . . . When the results from a 1912 are so superior to anything a DE provides. I've recently started using a OC Micromatic too and I'm considering just using the Micromatic and the 1912 exclusively and retiring the DE razors altogether. . . . so this thread poses a question I've been wrestling with for a couple of weeks now.

Although injectors have become my go-to razors, large blade SEs give me equally good results; it's just more awkward getting under the nose.

I haven't given up on my DEs entirely, and the best of them do give me excellent results. If I had it to do over again, I would still buy a (much smaller) number of them, and I use them for travel razors due to the easy availability of blades.

Why don't these things get more love?

Hush! We SE users are a cabal and our driving goal is to keep prices low! We normally don't say this stuff out loud.

EDIT: We even plant a few negative comments here and there!
