Can anyone identify this (I think) cartridge razor? from a Boots "Monogram" gift set

Lots of pics in coming.

So, i obtained a shaving gift set. If I'm being honest I got it because of the Boots shaving soap in it.

But it also came with a razor. Does anyone know what it is / if refills are available?

See also the brush, is there an easy way to work out what sort of bristles it has?

That's a Gillette Atra-compatible razor. You should be able to find Atra cartridges at many drug or grocery stores.

As for the brush... If it's a vintage brush, it's probably some kind of animal hair. Quick way to check is to comb out a loose hair (don't pluck it; minimize risk of damaging the glue plug) and set it on fire with a lighter. A synthetic fibre will melt while a natural hair will curl and burn... and probably stink like burnt hair.

Interestingly, I've got some 1950s and 1960s vintage brushes with boar knots that look just like that. To see if it's boar, dunk it in water and see if the hairs absorb water. If they do, then it's boar. If they don't, then it's badger.

If you're in America you can also try Personna Twin II blades, available cheaply. Or you could try some Gillette Vector blades (I'd recommend Indian rather than Chinese), Vector is the name used for the Atra system in various countries outside North America. If you're in Europe, the name is Gillette Contour, and you could also look for the compatible Wilkinson Sword Contact/Duplo blades

From the picture I'm guessing that the brush is a boar dyed to look like a badger which was a common practice in times past and sometimes still today. That guess is based on the hair looking too coarse (larger diameter hair) to be a badger.

You should be able to tell when you use it. Boar is stiffer than badger, at least until it is broken in. If you notice a big different is softness of the tips by soaking the tips for 5 to 10 minutes before shaving it is probably a boar.

All that said, many prefer a boar. No matter what, it is a lovely brush.
