Calling all Simpson 56 or 57 owners

I am very interesting in acquiring one of these brushes. However, I have found some conflicting information from online vendors regarding knot size/loft height for these brushes.

56: 19mm/41mm vs 21mm/45mm (knot size/loft height)
57: 22mm/45mm vs 23mm/47mm (knot size/loft height)

I want either the 21mm/45mm or 22mm/45mm as the 19mm knot is too small for my tastes and I already own a few brushes with 23mm knots. Would any owners be able to comment or provide actual measurements?

Thanks!

I will measure the 57 when I get home later. I don't have calipers, so the knot size will be eyeballed, but close enough for government work.

Thanks, Bob. I'm not too picky, +/- 0.00000000001mm would be fine :001_tt2:

I have the 57 and measured it yesterday with calipers. It has a knot of 23mm and a loft of 49mm.

I just got a 56 from WCS as a gift. I don't have exact measurements, but I eyeball the knot at around 20mm, with a loft of around 48mm. A little longer loft than I had expected actually. It's got a nice fan shaped loft, which is my preference... Nice brush.

Fan you say? Are you able to post a picture of your brush?

I love the look of the 56 and 57, but it seems based on WCS that the 56 has the same specs as the special. Why the double the price for the 56?

I haven't used the Special, but two possibilities come to mind. First the Fifties have very dense knots, and may squeeze more hair into the same real estate. Second, the handle of the Fifties is very heavy and solid, so that extra material may add to the cost.

Ahh, I didn't even think of density but that would make a lot of sense.

Plus a slight premium for added cool factor. :001_cool:

"Got Shoes?"
Maybe johnniegold can provide some info on his 56.

Sorry for the late entry into this thread. I am currently away on vacation.

I didn't pack any calipers on this trip (didn't want to take a chance carrying calipers in my bathing suit  ) but I would venture to guess that the 56 falls into the 21 mm range. I had a SR 3118 and it is certainly larger than that as I recall.

The Fifty Series is really quite an extraordinary range of brushes and I am baffled by the amount of time it took for me to get around to it.

Although the 56 is a bit smaller than the 57, I am glad that I obtained it since the 57 more closely mirrors the knot of the Duke 3 (which I have) as well as that of the recent customized Eagle G3 which I am awaiting on its delivery.)

If you are a fan of the Duke 3 and maybe even the Chubby 1 in Best than perhaps the 57 is for you. If you are looking for something a tad smaller and/or something different then the 56 is right up your alley.

Btw, the 56 in Best definitely leans towards fan-shaped as opposed to bulb-shaped.

As for the cool factor, you can't put a price on cool.

Remember even Fonzie loved the Fifties.

Ehhhhhhhhh. :thumbup1:

You might as well get a 46 too.

Btw Wim, start a 46 thread. I would be interested in that. :yesnod:

OK, nice idea!

I just deleted my post as I discovered the question was about the 56 and I was measuring up my 46.

Which I measured at

- 19-20 mm
- 40-41 mm

also.

And a stunning handle also.

(didn't I say 'in the subzero section of the cool wall' ?)
