What's new

Call me crazy but i use a new blade every shave

i just don't see the logic in using the same DE blade for 2,3,4,5,6,7 shaves. yet there are A LOT of posts that i read where members say "the second shave with ___ blade was the best" or "i get 4 shaves out of ___ blade". it seems to be the norm here that you use the same blade more than once so i'm i going against the norm by using a new blade for every shave? i've tried using the same blade more than once and the 2nd shave was definitely not as good as the first. it just makes sense to me that with every shave the blade gets more dull. plus they are cheap! why would i subject my face to a used blade?

well thats my argument and i'm coming out of the blade closet. i use a brand new blade with every shave.

If it works for you, so be it. I've never found a DE blade that was as good on the first shave as it is on the second, including the vaunted Super Iridiums and the GSB's.

Don't mess with what works. I only use a blade three times, myself. My chosen blades are on the cheaper end, anyways, so why not?

Nothing wrong with what you're doing and nothing wrong with using a blade until it is dull. I have found that many blades actually improve after the first shave and if I tried your way I would have never made this discovery.

but thats what im talking about....how is it possible that a blade IMPROVES after the first shave? i just don't get it.

I'm with you Jason, new blade each shave. I've tried to go two, three shaves but it's never the same as the first time. I do, however, understand "the second shave is better" folks. For some really sharp blades (feather), the first shave can seem a bit harsh but the second shave is just right.

PermaSharps are best (smoothest) on the 2nd go round, otw 1 or 2, rarely 3 times and my blade is gone.

You read that the plated blades get better after the first shave because the plating gets smoother. I don't know that its true or not. Personally, I see no difference in shave quality for 3 shaves on most blades and 5 with Med Preps, 7 o'clock Blacks, SI's, and Polsilver Iridiums. Stainless blades seem not to be a smooth to me as plated, with the exceptions of Polsilver super stainless, and Timors.

Did the corkers and the palm stroppers get to you? Some people believe that the blade gets smoother on the 2nd shave, because the first shave will smooth out the plating, remove microscopic burrs, etc. I don't deny the science behind it, but FWIW, I think it is a purely feel thing (a.k.a YMMV). And for 10 cents, who cares if binning a blade after 1 use is considered "wrong" by some?

i actually tried corking the blade before a shave and didn't notice any difference in that either. of course i do what works best for me.

I say do what feels right! I salute you Jason and Rey (and any others out there that are NBES). I personally use my blades 3-4 times, but that's because I want to stretch my money (aka I'm cheap).

The 2nd shave with a 7oclock black is smoother than the first. This goes for a few blades that I know of. If you don't understand then you'll just have to try it.. and if you're discerning enough you just might agree. however, if you're just trying to make it to 1000 posts in the first month and a half on B&B then YMMV.

Other than the obvious ... One of the benefits I see of DE is cost of blades. Depending on the blades you are using it can still be very economical to change to a new blade every shave. If that works for you then  I reckon.

I shave every second night most of the time (occasionally every third if its a weekend). I use a blade for 3-4 shaves (depending on brand) then change to a new one. So 100 blades would last me approx 7-8 months.

I personally get a smoother shave once a blade has been used. I use Feathers and 7 O'clock Yellows.
