Calani Oriental Plum

I did only one shave with it, so I will save a review for later.
But now, I simply must praise a soap that I just received.

It is Calani Oriental Plum, and it did make quite an entrance in the den!

It got mentioned here on a thread on artisan soaps, and I got curious.
A little bit of research on the forums gave high hopes, so I ordered.
I got all together three soaps and some samples delivered lightning fast in a flat box.

This is how it looks:

I stole the picture from our friends at Gut-Rasiert.de.
(How cool is that, by the way: a .DE extension to a shaving related URL).
Mine doesn't have the nice bowl.

The soap is a luxurious smelling soap that fits the winter months perfectly.

Scentwise: Mysterious, not overly fruity plum, a lot of sweet tobacco scents, some floral, maybe soft citrussy undernotes. Among its ingredients one of my favorites: lanolin.

Ingredients (also from Gut-Rasiert): Aqua, Elaeis guineensis oil, Stearic Acid, Cococs nucifera oil, Mangifera Indica Seed Butter, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide, Prunus amygdalus dulcis oil, Lanolin, Glycerin, Parfum, Xanthan gum, Eugenol, Geraniol, Coumarin, Linalool, Limonene.

I think it is interesting to notice that it really is a different type of soap at least in the fragrance department than the renowned British and US soaps.

Easily the best lather I made from a soap that I am not used to.
And a new brush also (the limited Semogue Silvertip, so brandnew).
Yet, a piece of cake. Excellent, effective lather.
And lots of it.

The shave itself was totally slick and hassle free. No irritation, no burn, no whatsoever. A perfectly fine shave in two passes with the old Muhle 106. I do not balm or A/S as I do not want to ruin the lovely smell that lingers after the shave. Some staying power it has, I shave in the shower so it also had to endure a rinse of a well scented Chagrin Valley shampoo bar. It's still here, though. Impressive.

This one is going into the dopp kit for Christmas and will see abundant use the next days. I think I'll do review then, and maybe make some pics and post further impressions!

Not a cheap soap at 7 euro for a small puck, but what a nice experience it was!

I've been really wanting to try this soap too, but the $16 price tag for 65g of soap from Royal Shave almost puts it in MdC crazy cost territory. Someday I'm sure I'll bite though.

Calani is a very hard soap but once properly loaded the lather is plenty slick with great cushion. The scent of the Highland Honey can be best described as a sweet cherry honey and has become addictive despite initially appearing to be too sweet. It is as good as the very best soaps often mentioned on the forum in my opinion. Highly recommended. :thumbup1:

You cheated. You're supposed to wait until after Sinter Klaus day to open your shave stuff. Mine is still waiting under tree for (fake) surprise.

I did smell the highland honey and SWMBO quickly stole it from me for personal use - it smells that good. Now I'm left with dubai to shave with. I can only imagine the rest of these smell equally fantastic.

We open the packages overhere on the night before and since that would be december 5th he waited long enough! :001_tt2:

In any case Calani soaps are wonderful. I tried Dubai for first time today and what I can say is it shaves like a denser GFT soap. I feel that veggie soap factor but the lather is thick somehow. I got a very subtle scent almost too subtle, but I'll try again some more to form an accurate opinion.

Today I tried the Cadre Noir.

It is a different soap than the Oriental Plum, it seems.
Ingredients: Aqua, Sodium Stearate, Glycerin, Potassium Stearate, Sodium Olivate, Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Palmate, Potassium Olivate, Potassium Cocoate, Potassium Palmate, Sodium Almondate, Sodium Shea Butterate, Sodium Castorate), Potassium Almondate, Potassium Shea Butterate, Potassium Castorate, Kaolin, Alcohol, Hydrolyzed Silk, Xanthan Gum, Benzyl Benzoate, Eugenol

Like the Oriental Plum quite a hint of plum under the patchouli and some fresh fruits. I really start to like these soaps.

I lathered it with a barely used Semogue LE Silvertip, and again a piece of cake. Three easy passes from just a moment of swirling. This soap seems to need a bit more of water.

If I can free up another jar I 'll try the Highland Honey tomorrow!

Wim, I am glad you like them but just looking at the ingredients (and the price tag) I can't say I am very much impressed by their first ingredient; water...

I'm still addicted to the Calani soaps for now. They perform wonderfully despite the first ingredient. Trust me on that one.

@talibeard

I think her soaps are not overly strong scented.

I wine terms, they are 'full bodied'.
That is, a lot of scent but not strong.

Calani also seems to favor mild scents, no harsh in-your-face scents, so in spite of the full body they are mild.

She sent me a sample - do you want to try it (I think you are from the Netherlands, right?)
That sample is non-scented, by the way.

I would indeed. I know Paul Kox (dutch barbershop) is carrying them but to be honest most of my experiences with artisanal soap makers are far from good. At the same time I like supporting small firms...:001_rolle

I am great at making problems out of nothing I guess......and yes I do live in the lowlands.
