C40 knot - what have you done?

I got an ER C40 as part of an eBay lot (with a mug and Old Spice puck). Thrilled with the soap and handle, but the mug had a repaired handle, but that is another story...

Anyway, it is red and white as you commonly see with C40s and 100s. I put a black badger in another C40. I also kept the badger knot in a 100 and still use it as is. Mulling the options. If you have a photo......:thumbup1:

I went with a Best Badger from Ace Shaving. Kept the black cup inside this C40 to keep it as original as possible. Good lathering brush. Soft tips with good backbone.

Nice. Thanks. I have done more than a couple finest and when I saw silvertip in that handle it just looked right. I'm thinking <50mm to help with backbone, too. I'll post the result. I had to sand away the shiny outer film due to some light scratches. I'll do some more hand polishing before the knot arrives....

Great! Mine was one of the threads you referenced. The C40 was my very first restore. I used WD black badger and set it way too high. I also used a very small knot (18mm, IIRC), but you know what? That brush despite being fairly airy and floppy is a fantastic face latherer. It just feels a bit airy, not like a dense Simpson, but it generates more lather some of the very high end brushes. The feel on the face is pretty scritchy, but not unpleasant for me and the flow through of this thing makes up for the floppiness. It just oozes lather right where you want it to. It's hard to describe, but the feel of this brush is very different and very good. I do not use it that often because I have so many other wonderful brushes, but I will not get rid of it. It's a great brush for those special days when I need a good exfoliation on my face. I learned a lot on that restore. I also initially did not take the mold marks out, but have done so since and I am definitely recommending it. It makes the handle look very much better. I would also throw a weight in the bottom of the handle if I were to do it again. All in all I like the C40 handle, but I consider it a so-so ER (look at the ER 650PB I restored, which is solid resin handle). They were pretty common and inexpensive back in the day. Mine came form CVS or something like that back in the day when I tried using a brush and Williams or Colgate soap in mug with cartridges. I then gave up on wet shaving until now, but the brush stayed with me. It had a very low quality boar knot in it originally that shed like crazy and was basically trash after 20 years of disuse. Anyway, I think it will be a fabulous brush for you with a WD silvertip knot in it. Enjoy the process!

Test fit at 50mm or so.

And I appreciate the Clubman sample Larry sent with the knot. Never got a chance to smell it before. The wife and I had the same reaction. Powder. THIS is old school barber shop.

Finished!

I put three hex nuts and a cork in the handle with the DevCon 5 minute stuff to hold the contents and set the knot. Final loft 48mm. Feels great in the hand. Giving it up on BST for $30 for someone else to enjoy. I have a ridiculous amount of brushes sinkside already!

I liked it so much I bought it - lucky me! So, I sold three brushes yesterday and only bought one today so that's progress right fellas? I mean, baby steps...

Sam, now I can cover the Dovo guilt free, I'll PM you when I go through Toronto next week. Also, I saw in the thread you linked to that you have a Conky doll. We're going to get along just fine!:lol::thumbup1:

Too funny!!! I was giving some serious consideration to falling out of the 2013 Sabbatical as I had a C40 handle before but sold it. Small world!

Psst... It's not a doll..... It's a artistan's instrument ofrefined communications (i.e. a finger puppet!)
