Buying Vintage vs New ?

My thread concerning "brush rotation" received great feedback.... "THANKS" !

So I'm looking to add a few to the two I have now. I'd like to stay in the $25-$45 price range if possible.
All of which raised for me the question of purchasing vintage or new and the main things to be aware of, especially for a vintage purchase.
I know the differences between Boar, Badger and Synthetic but I've also read about knots, stiffness, backbone, etc... and have no idea what any of these terms mean.

If there is a previous post covering this topic please direct me.

Have never bought a used brush, and don't plan to. The hairs just seem like a fertile ground for germs. Metal razors can easily be sterilized, but I am unsure of brushes. Many, many people will feel differently, and haven't had ANY problems whatsoever from pre-owned brushes, but I won't be one of them. Was that any help?

Rather than picking a price and trying to fit anything within that price you should:

  1. Decide what type of brush you are looking for (boar, badger, synthetic, if you are not sure, search the forum for what the difference is)
  2. Decide what type of lathering method you need (face or bowl)
  3. Decide whether the brush will be used with creams or soaps or shave sticks
  4. Decide what size brush you would like (even a general "tall handle" or "stubby for traveling would be helpful)
Once you have this figured out post what you are after and you will receive recommendations that fit your "needs" not a lot of "gee I like this brush" responses which, for the most part, will be of little help to you.

If you are looking for the elusive perfect brush that does everything. Stand in line with everyone else :001_smile

Pull the used knot out and put a new one in, Larry at Whipped Dog can help you out, or Rudy Vey, or one of us can help you through the process... I'm vintage all the way!
