buying used brushes

Hello,

Just getting started with a safety razor and I am thinking about moving away from the store bought shave creams. I see people are selling used brushes on this site. Is that sanitary? Is there a way to sterilize them or am I being paranoid?

Thanks
Don

I belive letting it sit in hot water, cleaning with dish soap, rising, repeat, then letting it sit in some hot water with white vinegar, does the trick.

+1 to this.

Baby Shampoo works just as well as dish soap IME and can be used as an alternative.

Here's my take - it's very likely not to be a big deal. After all, when it is used it is drenched in soap and hot water. The suggestions mentioned above should help alleviate your anxiety.

Or you could wash it in soap and water and set it in the sun to dry.

I wouldn't get too worked up. Aside from the "ewww" factor, the guy who owned it from here probably washed that brush a whole lot more than the badger who owned it previously.

I don't find it gross at all. I have purchased a few used brushes and all I have done is test lather and use it the next morning.

No different that going to the barber and getting a shave, even if its a neck shave. That brush has sat in soap for years and touched who only knows how many people.

Although shaving with sterilized vintage razors didn't bother me at all after breaking into it with a Tech that was my grandpa's, the idea of using someone else's brush was almost revolting to me for a while. Praise the Lord I got over that!

But you really don't want to think about the squalid and filthy holes badgers habitate, that is when they're not scavenging or engaging in shameless fornication.

I have convinced myself that a shaving brush is a perpetually self-cleaning item. I ignore the reality that brushes also exfoliate, leaving dead skin cells embedded in the knots.
