What's new

Butterscotch Chubby 3 Manchurian. or?

So, Im pretty new to wet shaving, but I've already developed quite a few acquisition disorders. At the moment I only have one brush, a Duke 2 Best. After taking a look in the "Newbies, show off your gear!" thread, and seeing Hedonist222's newbie setup, he has me yearning for a Butterscotch Chubby 3 Manchurian.

Too make things worse, I can't seem to locate where to buy one. I was on the Simpsons website, and it is nowhere to be found. They have the Butterscotch Chubby 2 Manchurian, but not the Chubby 3. Now, do I need the Chubby 3? I have no idea, probably not...I've never even used a Chubby let alone this one. I honestly don't even know what Manchurian is. I know the basic badger qualities, Pure, Best, Silvertip, Super...but Manchurian has never really come up. I assume it is just another type? I like the butterscotch handle because it is different.

Do any of you own this brush? Is it really as special as I think it is? What makes the Manchurian better than the Super Chubby's?...or is it? For those that do own it, where did you purchase it? and how much was it? I realize that it is quite the pricey item as the Chubby 2 version is 235pounds on the Simpsons site. Would I be just as happy getting the Butterscotch Chubby 2 Manchurian?

I'm very happy that I was introduced to wet shaving... but it really is going to be the end of me.

Great post - I too am a newer to wet shaving and have been trueling the Simpsons website, the BST and the bay for a simpsons brush to buy. I did just buy the Wee Scot which and after a couple weeks of use I think I am really going to like it as a travel brush but I looking for an everyday workhorse to replace my original brush which is edwin jagger medium sized brush in the best hair. I think I want the Duke 2 (I do not like too big of a brush and like some backbone) - possibly in the manchurian but I am wondering the same about what kind of difference it makes. I did read on here a thread about the Jubilee and the people who bought it raved about the manchurian hair. Also, there is something about that butterscoth color that is appealing. Good luck with your quest!

You can find it under the shop > limited editions portion of the Simpsons site.
Prepare yourself - you can buy roughly 5 Dukes like you have for the cost of one of those Chubby Manchurians.

I have that same Edwin Jagger brush and I think I'm going to replace it with a Duke 3 in best. Apparently the Duke 3 super isn't worth the price -- too floppy -- but I'm not sure about the manchurian.

My mistake - sorry about that.
It's a Chubby 2 Manchurian they have there.

You can contact Simpsons to see if they will custom make one for you.

No problem. As I mentioned in my original post, I did notice the Chubby 2 there... so I am curious if that may be the better bet for me at this point. I assume a custom brush would cost even more? I don't want to get too out of hand on the spending... so if thats the case I may have to settle for a Chubby 2. I'm hoping hedonist222 will let me in on his source.

Ah, I missed the part of the post under the pic. Guess I was too distracted by the Butterscotch beauty.

A Chubby (~28mm knot) is going to be significantly denser than a Duke (~21mm knot). The Best hair is also different from the 2-band Manchurian.
Manchurian/2-bands in general have soft tips with a firm backbone. They are not floppy at all. If you like a little scritch with your brush, they can usually provide it as well. Don't expect a pillow of softness. Expect very soft tips with good strength behind them.

I wouldn't be worried that you will be doubling up on the same brush - these are 2 different animals.

And you are most likely correct, I would assume that a custom order would cost more (not to mention a Chubby 3 already being quite a bit more than a 2 b/c of the amount of hair in the dense knot).

how long have you been wet shaving?
I say enjoy your brush and appreciate it. 6 months or 4 later revisit the brushes when u have more knowledge. hell you could choose to build your brushes like me. I just buy handles and knots. but I love the simpsons brushes. a pharmacy close by has them available to see on display. no orange chubby 3 though.
I still enjoy my old omega pure badger I got as my first and now my tgn finest. this iwll be PIF'd to my brother when I build my new one with a bigger loft. why a bigger loft while maintaining the same knot size? if you're asking why then do some more research on brushes so you can understand what u prefer in terms of knot diameter, loft heights, handle height and weight, etc etc etc

How will using my current brush for a few months give me more knowledge? Having nothing to compare it to I have no idea what I like. I purchased the Duke 2 after asking questions, like I did here, and people gave their opinions on the brush. Sure I could google and try to find answers, but I haven't really found anything on this brush which is why I posted here. Why do you think that reading about the different measurements will give me a better understanding of what I prefer? I have always found that testing things out works best for me, but I won't test things out blindly... I like to know what others opinions are first. I think my Duke 2 is great, but that isn't to say that I wouldnt like a boar brush, a horse brush, a bigger brush, or a smaller brush more. I truly have no idea.

No tattoo mistakes!
I don't own a Simpson Chubby 3. But based on my experience with other brushes, I'm pretty sure I'd prefer a Chubby 2. Unless you're just looking for a trophy brush, I'd recommend seeing if you could pick up a smaller size brush with Manchurian hair to determine if and how much you like it before investing in a Chubby 3. If it turns out to be not so much, medium size brushes appear to me to be easier to sell and get you money back from than very large and very expensive brushes.

FWIW, I've had a Tulip 3 in Manchurian since around October. I like it alot, but I frankly can't distinguish (hairwise) between it and an M7 I bought around the same time in 2-band Super. (Both brushes have Butterscotch handles.) The Chubby 2 has tempted me sorely. I have a concern, however, that the increased density of a Chubby 2 with only 50mm of loft would turn out to be too much of a good thing (i.e., too much scrub). And as much as I enjoy scrubby 2-bands, I've recently come around to a deeper appreciation of the characteristics of high quality 3-bands. So the Chubby 2 in Manchurian hasn't been as much of a distraction to me as it was previously? In any case, I'd have absolutely no interest in a Chubby 3.

But I guess it depend to some extent on how big your head is.

The Chubby lineup is different from all other Simpsons because of their great density. They are all terrific brushes (and are my personal favorites), but I think the Manchurian is a bit of an "acquired taste". I'd recommend ordering a Chubby 2 in Super 2-band (or Super 3-band) to see if you like the additional density and stronger backbone before you move up to the Manchurian. The CH2 has a much larger knot than the Duke's, which is why I suggest that you start with a CH2 rather than the (really big!) CH3.

are there any stores by you that carry brushes? maybe get a better idea on the loft, maybe you like smaller lofts, maybe bigger. That is what I meant by my comment. I dislike large floppy lofts but medium ok, for fine badger I like shorter stubbier lofts. silvertip have yet to build. its sitting there, the knot, staring at me. lol

I have yet to find a brick and mortar anywhere near me. I would love to be able to go into a store and check them out in person, but at the moment that isn't an option. That would definitely be my first choice.

Interesting thoughts. Until I saw the brush pictured above I was actually more drawn to the Chubby 2, and it would seem as though many others have the same opinion. I will look into getting a less expensive Manchurian to test out the hair. I have really only heard good things, but I suppose its a matter of opinion. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

I have been wanting to give the Chubby line a try for the larger knot size, but as for what hair...I wasn't totally sure. Why would you say that the Manchurian is an acquired taste? Is it much different from the silver tip, super, best? Would it make sense to own both a Chubby 2, 2-band...and then potentially a Manchurian? Or would I likely want to unload the 2-band if I purchased that first?

There are a lot of forum posts on the Manchurian Simpson's if you Google it. I have not read any bad reviews on them, but they are costly. I just purchased a Chubby 2 (Best) and think that it is a nice size but the handle is short and fat (not the most comfortable). I am still breaking it in. I also ordered a Manchurian M7 from Mark at Simpsons. All the Manchurians are pretty expensive, so I would choose the one you really want rather than going down the trial/error route with the Manchurian. You can always resell it if you don't like it for whatever reason. You are looking at spending between $200 to over $300, for the Manchurians. You will have to contact Simpson's directly, as I did, and Mark may have the style you want available. Just know that some brushes are best for face lathering, some for bowl/mug/scuttle lathering, or are all-arounders. If you are new to wet shaving, you may not know what would suit you best until you experiment some more. Then again, you could get a do everything brush. Mark will probably recommend the M7 as he did for me.

The Manchurian is an ultra-dense brush with a very strong backbone and it is not to everybody's liking. Speaking from personal experience, I think that I would have been disappointed had I jumped to a Manchurian for my first 2-band brush because I needed to get used to the feel of other, milder 2-bands first. On the other hand, the Chubby 2 is one of the most popular and best-loved of all brushes because it has very soft tips, good backbone and does everything well. I am guessing that at least 90% of serious brush collectors have at least one Chubby 2 in their collections.

I highly doubt that you would want to sell the 2-band after you buy a Manchurian; you'll want to keep them both. Getting the Manchurian doesn't mean you are buying a better brush than the 2-band, you are buying a brush that has a very different personality.

The M7 may be a good starter option for me...I see they have it in the Butterscotch Manchurian, but currently out of stock. I am considering the Jubilee, but am worried that it will be similar to my Duke (but in Manchurian). I will want to get a Chubby for sure, but maybe going the more basic route with best or super would be better to see if I really like the high density before dropping the big bucks.
