Burt's Bees replacement scents?

Gentlemen, my boyfriend recently ran out of Burt's Bees Bay Rum Cologne (which I bought as a half-full sample from a drugstore; it was their last bottle), and of course it's been discontinued. :frown: I don't know what to get him to replace it—can any of you please help?

I did order the Ogallala sample for a penny (plus $4.80) shipping, since I figured what do we have to lose. But which ones out of all the bay rums do you think are most like the Burt's Bees scent? I think what he liked about it was its "non-perfumey" smell, if that makes any sense—the spicy/citrus plainness of it. Anything else I hold up to him in the store, he generally makes a face and declares it too girly/flowery/"too much like cologne."

Thank you in advance for your expert assistance—I apologize if I'm making any stupid n00b errors; I'm just trying to help reunite a cranky boyfriend with his favorite aftershave/cologne scent! :blushing:

Can't go wrong with Pinaud's Bay Rum. It's inexpensive and you can find it in most drugstores. If you have a Walgreen's close by, you can even check on line to see if they have it. C. O. Bigelow makes a Bay Rum after shave balm that's very nice, and you can also get a cologne to go with it. Not perfumy at all, but it adds citrus to the normal spicyness of the bay rum. You can find it at most Bath and Body Works.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! I did just ascertain that the Walgreen's down the street has some Pinaud's, so a quick trip there for sure—and there's a Bath and Body Works in the other direction, so we'll check 'em out.

I highly recommend the Ogallala Bay Rum Limes & Peppercorns. It's very light, clean and surprisingly long lasting.

Girlfriend-

Check out Burt's Bees website. A few months back I ordered the Bay Rum Aftershave Balm, Bay Rum Cologne and some Bay Rum Bath Soap. They are only selling it thru their website these days, but they still have it.

For some reason they have decided not to sell this line to stores anymore. Baffles me, but at least you can still get it..

Hope this helps you!!

all the best,

Marty E.

The "Cracker Barrel" chain of restaurants still carry the Bay Rum products by Burt's Bees. I don't know if it's being dropped in the near future or not, though.

Thanks Bob and Marty—I just didn't think that could be the same cologne, because it doesn't look brown the way the old one did? Here's a picture....

But if it's basically the same one, then you just made my day!

I think it would be your only choice that would be near the same scent! All the other ones that are mentioned do not smell anything like Burt's Bees. They are nice scents too, just not the same. I also wear the Pinaud's Bay Rum but again, it's not the same as Burt's Bees! The Ogallala Bay Rum just has to strong a clove smell for me. I have not tried the new Burt's Bees but I was told that it was reformulated. I also love the scent but I still have about 3 oz. left on my last bottle. When that is gone I will have to use the Reformulated Burt's Bees also.

Thank you so much, Larry—that was JUST the exact information I needed! I already ordered the 1¢ Ogallala but we can pass it along to a friend if he doesn't like it, which I suspect he will not.

Well, I'm going to go ahead and order the reformulated one now, so we'll let you know how close of a match it is! Thank you again.

If you want you might check out ebarbershop.com. They have a ton of items that have been discontinued.

I would only suggest ebarbershop as a VERY VERY last request. As a matter of fact, if they were the only place in the world that had what I wanted I would just go without.

+1,000,000,000.

Big plug for the greatest Bay Rum in the universe.

OK, I contacted a friend of mine who is a district manager for this chain, and he claims that once they get rid of the existing inventory that will be it for the BB BR. It has, indeed, become an internet-only item.

Girlfriend-

I think you'll be ok with your Burt's Bee's order. I have used the BB Bay Rum cologne and aftershave for about five years now. When I ordered my new stuff a few months back, the cologne was the same as my old batch from a few years back. The only change I noticed was a different bottle that now has an atomizer. It's the same stuff!!

Not to speak for Clubman Rob---(but I will!)...I bet he is referring to Pinauds Bay Rum...That's why he's The Clubman!!!!!!

And Pinauds is excellent stuff...I would be surprised if your boyfriend didn't like it (and you too!!)

all the best,

I wanted to bump this thread, as there is some minor controversy in the reviews section regarding the current BB BR.

So, the original BB BR came in the brown bottle and was available online and at some chain stores, including the Cracker Barrel chain of souvenir shop/restaurant hybrids. From what I gather, the online BB site sold the bottle solo, but at Cracker Barrel (where I purchased mine) it was only available as part of a larger gift set. So, comparing the "old" and "new" Bay Rums, I'm going on the Cracker Barrel version, as I've never tried the bottle available online previously on the Burts Bees site; though based on the pictures, they look exactly the same.

My old store bought version came with an atomizer, as does the new online bottle. Apparently the old online bottle came without a sprayer. Also, the old version retailed for 20.00 online (for four ounces) while the new one goes for 22.00 (for two ounces). Therefore, this new version is more than twice as expensive as the old version.

As far as formulation, to my nose there is a distinct difference between the old and new blends. I compare the old version more to a "classical" bay rum- earthy, strong, and short lived. The newer version seems to take on more of a CO Bigelow m.o.- that is, it's lighter, fresher and less fleeting. Less "aggressive" is a better description. There seems to my nose more complexity to this blend than there was in my old bottle.

Looking at the ingredients list, it would seem that there is only a superficial difference in ingredients. I would like to see if anyone else has tried the older stock and the new version, and if they have spotted any difference in blends. This wouldn't be the first time I had a puzzling item purchased from a big chain that doesn't seem to fit in to the product line anywhere (re: my limited edition weirdo CO Bigelow Bay Rum that looked as though they were trying to ape Royall Bay Rum in the web wrap). Myanmar Shave's post puzzled me, as I notice a distinct difference between the old and the new.

Rob-

Just caught your post---I had forgotten about this thread. My older bottle is the four oz. one that looks like a small flask. It's a flat bottle with an aluminum top, no atomizer. This version of Bay Rum is incredibly powerful-enough so that I bought an atomizer to use. I would dab it on with a Q-Tip on pulse points and it was more than enough to last all day and well into the evening. I would say I purchased it about five years ago.

My second bottle looks like the current one on the Burt's Bees website. Smaller size with an atomizer but smells exactly the same as my older larger bottle. This one I purchased in Jan. or Feb of this year I think. You've got me curious about the differences in your bottles. Just curious-how long a time frame between your purchases?

I like Burt's Bees Bay Rum. It's unique and potent. But honestly since finding Pinauds, Ogallalla, Royall and Superior 70, I havn't used it much. Think I'll revisit it soon.

I believe my old bottle was purchased around three years ago. It is identical to what you describe, except for the addition of an atomizer. It's strong, but nowhere in the neighborhood of the potency you described from your original bottle.

Maybe our noses/skin chemistry are different but I really had to be careful with the Burt's Bees or I'd overdo it. Whereas most Bay Rums are fleeting on me and I can get a little liberal with application, The BB could be like a room fogger if I wasn't careful.

Just out of curiousity how do you like it? I've not seen you mention it much in your posts. Also-have you tried the AS balm? That's a nice product with nice soothing qualities and a different but very good scent. The Bay Rum body bar soap is by far their best product. It smells so good its unbelievable and again different from their other Bay Rum products...

cheers-

Marty, is the Burts Bees Bay Rum cologne scent similar to the Balm? I've got the balm on, and I'd love to have a matching cologne.. (Ogallala is close, but yet different)

My wife bought me the BB Bay Rum balm at a Yoga studio.. funny where that stuff shows up.. though all you see now is their newer line of Men's products, not the Bay Rum stuff.
