What's new

Burly Men these days won't wear Burly

[I obtained a second unopened original bottle of Burly aftershave. It compared favorably to the first, to my nose and memory, the Real Thing (this stuff keeps forever).
As part of my quest to reproduce this particular scent and make it available to a new Market I decided to recruit a few diverse "noses" to give me feedback as to whether they would purchase a scent like this.
"John" is a 45 year old Biker, Contractor, heavy construction. He remembers his Dad wearing Burly.
"Christy" is a 34 year old light-skinned Woman.
"Heather" is 21, a College Student.
"Jackie" is a late 30ish HR Consultant from Ohio.

John, upon applying it to his sweaty face( it has been in the 100's around here all Summer) replied "It smells like my Old Man!" 10 minutes later he told his Hispanic Helper " Damn, I smell so good I'm gonna make love to myself!" He doesn't want anymore.
Christy said she knows what smells good and enjoyed wearing a Mans' scent. But she gave me no indication she wanted to smell it again. (I do not prod my Test Subjects).
Heather simply said "Old Mans' smell".
Jackie said nothing, but lingered around after I had been outside working in the heat wearing liberal amounts and came into the Main Office. She walked by me a dozen times, stopping, coming back, lingering.
The Research will continue. Burly is a soapy smell with hints of tobacco and a trace of something unidentifiable that is addictive. Before I invest copious amounts of money in bringing it back I would like to make sure it would pay back in enough Sales to justify the cost. Until then I will wear my extra bottle, splash a little on your shirt and it lasts a long time, actually getting better as the day goes on.

I love OS Burly! I think it's the most macho scent I own (in a very large collection). But that overtly manly smell is one of the problems for you, if you try to market a smell-alike. Although B&Bers have a lot of love for old-school stuff, the market at large leans toward light, aquatic-type fragrances, so you'd be swimming upstream against a heavy current. A second problem is that Burly is rare, so very few guys have ever had a chance to smell it. You'd need a lot of customers making blind buys to be successful. Third, the original stuff is so strong (I have the cologne; I'm assuming the AS is very similar) that very little is needed for each application, meaning a bottle lasts a lonnnnnng time.

Anybody else out there own original Burly and care to chime in?

Styptic you are correct, never has a more Manly scent has been created. I find it curious that Shulton marketed it mainly to wear when you were, um, with the opposite sex. I also find it interesting that Test Subject Jackie responded so forthrightly( we have no history, just hey in the morning). There may be a niche Market Segment Type for something like this, which is what any basement perfumer desires to exploit.
I intend to next give samples to;
Bobby, newly re-married Biker, 46, Southerner
Rod, 48 year old maintenance supervisor, Michigan.. and
Felix, 23,mexican painter
I want to see if there may be a Geographical thing going on, or perhaps a macho type Hispanic Market waiting on the return of Burly.

Pungo, please keep me in mind and PM me if you put that juice of yours into production. I hope it works out. And for what it's worth, I'm a 54-year-old white collar guy who travels the country and prefers the company found in blue-collar bars. Salt of the earth types, just like Burly.

Kingfisher, the GC/MS tests will run 1500 dollars, from there an additional 1-3 thousand to formulate reliable Compounds. I love the stuff and was fired up to finance the effort but decided to follow common procedure, IE Identify Your Market.
If I can continue finding good Product on Ebay ( I have a bottle of cologne on the way) I can wear it to my hearts content for less money. Still, I intend to get a dozen more impressions from a cross-section of the Populace before I make a final decision.
I will say it again, I wish someone would beat me to it and reproduce the stuff.

With cold weather approaching, it's almost time to break out the Burly! If it's not too crass, may I ask what you had to pay for the bottle now on its way to you? The stuff is really hard to come by. Thanks.

I paid 14.99 buy it now with 7 bucks shipping for the cologne. The 2 bottles of aftershave( one new in box) run around 18 dollars each. Recently there has been many Burly offers on Ebay. I wish I had bid on a set including Burly, a 9 ounce bottle of Shulton OS, OS Signature, and two old OS talcs, it went for 9.95 plus shipping. There was a new Burly Box Set from England including Burly Hair Tonic that could have been had for 23 bucks, counting the Postal charges.
I have all I need now, watch the Bay, this stuff is coming out of the woodwork. I noticed Shulton OS may or may not smell new( I picked up a bottle in a ships throttle decanter and it had turned sour) but so far the Burly holds its own, smells perfect like 1968 should! Trying not to bore ya'll but I love the stuff.

Hey Pungo, keep us updated on how this goes...I've never tried it, but I would probably be interested. (You just gotta help me find a place to hide it once I buy it so the girlfriend doesn't find it).

If you ever find a bottle, get it! It is so unlike any vintage AS, I doubt your girl will even realize that it is old school. :thumbup1:
