Bummed over cleaning a razor...

After recieving some nice looking Gems(2 Gold plated Gem Jr's and a chrome/nickle Micromatic)I decided to quickly clean and sanitize 1 of the Gem Jr's before my 1st use of the razor. So I took some warm water and after scrubbing the razor with a soft toothbrush sprayed on some scrubbing bubbles and let the foam work for about a minute rinsed it off and wiped it dry with a soft clean cotton cloth. Then used a 5 min. or so Marvicide soak. Now my plating still looks good but somewhat stained in spots. I use this same method on my Schick injectors weekly and never noticed this. What gives? I just want to restate I recieved the razors in very good shape it's not until I gave the razors a once over that I noticed this.

it still seems like your cleaning method only unmasked the underlying problem. everyone uses the exact same cleaning method and never reports any actual damage from it. sorry :(

I've had this happen lots of times.
most recently concerning a plastic case with my slim.
it was very dirty when I got it, but at least the dirt was all around consistent.
I cleaned it up with my usual cleaning regimen and found a big ugly spot that I can't get rid of. no matter what I do. I think it's right in the plastic (50 years of dirt will do that ).
I suppose I'm left with trying more cleaning products, but where does it end?

Looks like it is time to break out the polish and see what you get. Personally I have used Simichrome (sparingly) on a couple of Slims with great results. The plating on a Micromatic I have appears to be of better quality than Gillette plating, but this may be opinion and not fact.

Yes, the last step in cleaning is polishing (I use Maas). It removes tarnish and metal discoloration as well as providing a nice shine.

Sounds like it might help with your metal "stains".

Don't over do the Maas on gold plate (or avoid abrasives all together, as it'll strip off the lacquer and the gold in no time)

You could consider it patina and keep using the razors. If they're still functional, they're fine in my book. I don't get too hung up on cosmetics and find charm in something showing signs of use.

My dining room table has evidence of over 100 years of dining on the tabletop. I could steam out the dings and refinish it, just like new. But I love knowing that people have eaten over it for a century. Similarly, the bit of brass on my single ring is a great reminder that I'm just one of many users. I won't have it replated.

Many Thanks for the replies. If the Gem Jr. is a good shaver for me I'll plan to use like it is occasionally. If it proves to be a great shaver for me and rivals my injector I will use it regurlarly and in time replate it.
