What's new

Building boxes?

Last two. Lyptuswood holding my newest Thuri rocks. The big part is done. Now its time for the hand sanding and finish coats of something...

hmmmmm, this thread is giving me some great ideas...HazMat Shaver, that is exactly the thing I was thinking of doing myself rather than cutting through 3/4" stock and adding a separate top and bottom... Nice work!!!

I will probably make quick templates of each stone for my router to follow. Also, need to decide if I should make individual boxes for each stone or put my 2 arks in one box... coti and jnat in another with slurry and tomonagura...too many decisions...

Thanks. Im no good at making a box out of tiny pieces of wood and expecting to stay together for years, so the router is my new friend. It works and the wood is very solid. It ain't falling apart. Ever!

I did one with a Tomo and Jnat, but the rest of my stones i use different rubbers for slurry so i keep most of my Nagura and other rubbers in a drawer. I thought about making a larger box for two hones but decided to do them separate as smaller is easier to store and if you use one Jnat you most likely wont be using the other very soon. At least not me.

One finished. Sanded to 600 grit and then a couple coats of Ren. Wax. No stains or anything. Just the wax...

Nice looking box Masterofpups. And I love the name. I do enjoy Metallica!

"Look what I found"
Did not really make the box, but modify for my use. This started when I got a 6” box Coti months ago. It was held together with rubber bands when found. The box has been on my work bench, thinking maybe I could will it back together. Fast forward to this weekend. SWMBO purchased some gift boxes for B-day gifts. When her back was turned, I grabbed one to see if any stones would fit. A 8x2 Inch dropped in perfectly. Unfortunately the mirrored prismatic covering was not to my liking. I found and printed a design that had a mid century look to it and I could coverup any mistake I make. Do not know if this is technically decoupage but covered with the paper. Sacrificed the old 6” box to recover the label and put it proudly on top. One less homeless Coti in the world. Now I have to explain where the box went

"Look what I found"
A few new homes for my Norton’s, a salesman sample and a razor hone. Tried to copy the larger by pictures of the original. If I ever find what the rub stone is, it will drop rite in. Used the drop of the glued bookmatch stock to make the smaller hone box so all matches. Used some dark stain to get the grain to pop

Very nice boxes Tim.
The rub stone on the big norton was some type of synth. Maybe you could find a used and abused Aloxite B-Hone for a few bucks and custom fit a rub stone for your set. That’s likely as close as you’ll get to finding one.
