Building boxes?

Hummmmm......perhaps I can convince my cabinet maker wife of mine to make me some of these for my stone....nice examples here!

"Look what I found"
Got trapped in my workshop during a thunderstorm, so it's time to do a project. Went to the long ignored project pile of Straights and Brushes and decided to give a homeless Thuri a home. Found this stone a few years ago in a razor lot and has been sitting all this time until yesterday. Had some ziricote to match other boxes I made last year. Cut up all the pieces and glued up. Today I sanded it up to 400 grit and hit it on the buffing wheel with Tripoli and carnauba wax for the shine. Cut the box in half on a table saw sled. Some last finish sanding and hardware. One less homeless stone in the world

Boxes are very simple if you don’t try to build the box and lid separately. Just build the box including top and bottom. Simply nail the pieces together with the top and bottom nailed on. After you get it built, saw the lid off. This will give you two open trays or in lidded boxes. Now take one of the boxes and glue some thin wood (think paint stirrers) inside around the perimeter. Now the other box will slide over the thin strips making a perfectly fitting lid. Slick eh?

Started the three boxes last month. Finally got around to finishing. Want to start some more project so time to empty the work table

Nice work, I like that stain. I've got the oak for my boxes, stain, tung oil and most of the hardware and tools but something else always seems to come up.

With the success of my last box, time to try again. Always wanted to make a box for my vosgienne, but being 8x3, did not have wood large enough that I liked. Used the drop pieces and glued up bookmatched to get a interesting grain pattern. This box is a simple rectangular shape, nothing fancy. Glued up over height, cut in half, trimmed for depth and stained. A beautiful box for a beautiful stone

Been wanting to make some boxes for my 8” and 9” coticules, but did not have any wood large enough that impressed me. Until I found a rough cut walnut 4x4 at a yard sale. With that problem solved, I ripped up a 12” slug to work with. Cherry picked the best for the tops, cut up the remaining for sides and end. Some glue, some sanding, and some hardware and I have three coti condos
