Buddel suminagashi Mini-Razor

This is a little razor form japanese suminagashi steel. The steel is hardened to 62 HRC. Unfortunately the blade got a crack at the hardening process. The crack is so unusuale, that I´m shure it was a material mistake in the steel and not something that went wrong at the blacksmithing or heattreating process.

Like you can see, the crack is not only beween the soft outer layers and the hard steel in the middle. The crack goes right trought the middle steel layer.

The razor is still usable. So I decided to finish it for my personal collection.
Hope the next pieces will be finished without any problems. Btw the handle is from custom made plywood (makassar ebony and maple). The spacer is from horn and brass.

pretty razor..but seriously unless you plan to chop up a body or do butcher work in the kitchen tht crack shouldn't bother you :thumbup1:

Good news, I don't think that is a crack. In order to make that type of steel they sandwich a piece of steel in between the damascus style material. I'm about 90% sure that what you are calling a crack is just the point in which the lamination ends thats why you don't see any damascus look on the bottom part. Hope that helps.

Be sure, it is a crack:

But it is not so easy to show this with a photo.

So, would there be a deep discount because of the crack?

Seriously, I would still want that little guy, crack and all!

I decided to make this little "cracker" as a test shaver for our German forum members. They had to pay the shipping and a little fee and can test shave the razor for 14 days. So they have a better possibility to see what they can get for their money and if it worth it. On the other way I will try to make some other similar razors with this shape, because I also like it very much. If they are ready, you know where you will find them :wink2:
