Buck Tooth Betty to Pinup Girl

Alright ladies and gentlemen,

I was sitting here thinking about a razor...one that was just an absolute mess. I tried my best to bring it back to life but through trial and error just made matters worse. She's been stripped and cracked and her poor little brass is showing right out from under her plating. A fine mess. But I have not given up hope on her. When I found her she was covered from head to handle in some serious grunge. I had done well to bring back some of her color prior to making an epic failure of a decision to hydrogen peroxide/vinegar her. Yes Yes, live and learn. It was stupid but getting to the point.

I was thinking of a thread where people take some seriously messed up razors. Functional, but as they say here in the south "A HOT MESS". They show before and after pictures of said razor. The worse they look from the beginning the better, and turn them into beauty queens. Then detail the method used for fixing her up and displaying her as your trophy model. This sounds like a lot of fun to me as you start off with something you wouldn't even want to look at, to something you want to display with pride for all here to see. If this topic has already been circulated as I'm sure it has feel free to mod it out of existence and direct us to said thread because this just sounds like a lot of fun to me.

I think the only real rules that should be observed is that you keep the original parts on the razor, no modding it cause that wouldn't really be an accurate representation of fixing it up with what it has. If you do this professionally it really wouldn't be DIY and shouldn't be used as a basis of comparison amongst us amateurs, plus the idea isn't to turn this into a vendor service thread but just homegrown fun for the rest of us. So ladies and gents what do you think? I'm not really thinking a contest so to speak though anyone is welcome to give they're opinion on any razor eye candy displayed and judge it accordingly. Plus the only prize is the trophy razor you poured your own blood sweat and tears in.

Last month, Sandmountainslim started a post proposing a similar idea.

Remember in the future that The Slim predicted this on a Christmas morn in 2009

How long before a new subculture arises in this hobby similar to the Rat Rod scene in custom cars?

How long before a group rebels against mint condition razors and beautiful custom handles and a Rat Blade Revolution occurs??

It is bound to happen sooner or later as it does in every hobby.
I can foresee the day where people shove an Old Type or NEW head on mismatched handles on purpose and even sand spots of finish off and touch up the handles with primer or flat black paint

Of course the more dangerous the better! So there will be shavers sticking thick paperclips under their blades and washers made outta bored out Indian Head Pennies. Probably be even a number of razors using non-razor components like the handle off of a spatula or other such inventions.

That thread progressed into a more serious vein discussing the future of wet shaving itself, and not the "Rat Razor" idea originally presented by The Slim or in this thread.

Last week, I started a Rat Razor project. Sadly, I got tied up with life over the weekend and couldn't finish it - the dishwasher died and SWMBO insisted that it be replaced. :001_tongu

Today I hope to be sanding primer and painting . . . hope to finish detailing by the end of the week and of course, will post before and after pics!! :001_cool:

This could be a fun thing to do with that ugly box of spare razor parts! :wink2:

The original idea was to find a real skunk of a razor and turn it into a beauty. That said, taking a junk drawer full of razors and making your own version is perfectly in keeping with the idea. As long as you aren't getting new parts or having something custom fab'd by somebody else. That's more of an "after-market" modification. Now that said, there is nothing wrong with taking it and having it plated or work like that done to it, after "YOU" have cleaned it up, arranged it how you wanted it. Posted it for the purists "then" you can go hogwild with it. I was tossing around the idea of cleaning an antique store razor up and then having it professionally engraved by a knifemaker or a gun engraver after-wards. Have fun with it, make it your own. Perhaps the wildest mod thread could show a full-blown nitrous funny razor that started out from this humble little thread.

This sounds like a fun idea. I am going through the same idea with a brush. I have an ever-ready that was just beat the death, really bad cracking and such. It's black and green and looks like frankenstein. I think it needs a matching razor.

I currently have the original buck tooth betty sitting in a bath of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar to finish stripping what little plating she had left on her off so that I can start working her over hard and heavy with my wire brush...photos soon to come
