Brush Recommendation

I want to first start off by saying I own only one brush and this new acquisition will be my second and LAST brush.

I currently own a Merkur Futur Silvertip. Not a big fan of the handle, but hey it was my first brush when my father started me in this wonderful hobby 7 years ago.

I use mostly soaps (razorock, queen charlotte, but looking to add some arko). I face-lather and like the softness of the silvertip, but would like something a little more firm than the Futur. I have large hands so a bigger brush is preferred. Not a fan of the skinny handle of the futur.

I am looking for a solid all around performer that can handle soaps as well as the occasional croap or cream.

Please don't encourage SBAD as I intend this and only this to accompany my Futur.

Side question, what is the lifespan of a brush? I have 7 years of use with 1-2 shaves per week on the futur.

Perhaps a Semogue Owner's Club 2 Band. Soft tips, lots of backbone, great ergonomic handle, very reasonable price.

Simpson's Colonel is my recommendation. It is one of the less expensive Simpson's makes. Soft tips, strong backbone, and is great with all kinds of soaps. It is the only brush I use since I bought it and works with everything. I think it is excellent value.

+1, the colonel is priced very well. It generates great lather from the toughest soaps.

My last brush was a SOC. My last one before that was an Edwin Jagger finest. Before that, my last one was a Simpson Duke 1 in best. Other last ones include a half dozen Omegas, a Vulfix, a Tweezerman and a couple of customs. They all work differently, but they all work well. Good luck with that "last" thing!

+1 Before I even read xraygun's response I was thinking SOC 2 band. For all the reasons he listed above—except he missed gorgeous looking.

That's funny! Who makes a pledge to buy their LAST brush? Good one!

I will defer to some badger brush experts for their recommendations if you want to stay with a badger. If you are open to boars, almost any Semogue (especially the Owner's Club, 1305, 1800) will be fine for any cream, croap or soap.

We won't "encourage" SBAD but we may enable an existing addiction.

I couldn't say for sure but looking at all the vintage brushes still being used I'm guessing a knot would last many years. All the more reason to have more than one brush! (Oh sorry, there I go enabling!)

You might want to also take a look at the new Muhle Silvertip synthetics in either the 23 or 25 mm size. The 23 is said to be especially good with soaps. I have both and find both to be excellent with the 23 being a tad firmer.

If you want one amazing brush with backbone and great softens, look into a Rooney Heritage XXL or a shorter loft M&F blond badger. They have amazingly soft tips, and fantastic backbone.

Putting an order together for soc2. Now who has dr Harris Windsor soap and soc2?

How about nothing fancy... I started with some cheap boars, but wanted to go with class, so got a couple of Silvertips.

I then saw that my local pharmacy has Omega brushes, and decided to give another boar a chance.

Hate to say it, but I enjoy the backbone it's got. While I love the softness of the Silvertips, I find that being able to work my Omega on my face with enough stiffness (backbone) to keep the hairs together so that I can control the formation and amount of lather is great, and it's turning into my favourite....

Not bad for a 15$ some brush.
