What's new

brush for everyday use

I'm looking to upgrade my shave brush.

I currently use only one brush: the cheapest Tweezerman badger brush. I usually get barely 4 passes out of the Tweezerman when lathering conservatively.

The only other brush I've tried is the very cheap boar hair brush that comes in the Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set and it was not to my liking.

My soap of choice is Van Der Hagen glycerin soap. I face lather using a variation of this guide. I scrub and then paint on the lather.

I'm currently leaning towards getting a best badger brush (mostly due to the comparisons on this thread).

Any advice?

If you use soaps and face lather than I have some good suggestions.

Boar: Semegue 1305; Excellent face lathering brush, softens beautifully and retains that boar back bone.

Badger: Rooney 1/1: A little too dense for me but an excellent brush.
Simpson Duke 2 in Best: Similar to the 1/1 but not as dense so I feel it performs better.

+1 on the 1305. :thumbup1: I also would recommend the SOC...does a great job on hard soaps like MWF. :thumbup1:

Almost any decent (read here Omega or Semogue) mid-sized (Loft: 50-ish mm, 22-34mm knot) boar will do a great job for low dough.

In the somewhat more expensive department my Rooney 3/1 in Genuine Silvertip was my sole daily brush for a long time. Good at just about any style of lathering and very comfortable.

In my opinion, there is no substitue for a Badger Brush, and i imagine you'll be extremely happy with a Duke 2 or a Rooney size 1 in any of thier shapes.

The most important piece of information needed when answering your question is;

What's your budget?

The Edwin Jagger Medium in Best is a great brush! If you want to spend a bit more, I would recommend a Simpsons Duke 2 in Best.

Here are my current thoughts:

The Edwin Jagger Better Badger medium looks great (especially for around $40).

The Rooney 1/1 seems pretty small. I'm also a little worried that a silvertip might be too floppy for me.

Simpson Duke 2 looks like a really nice brush. It's expensive so I still need to do some more research until I'm sold.

The low price of the boar brushes is really tempting, but I think I'm going to stick with a badger brush this time (there will be a next time, but hopefully not soon).

The Rooney brushes are by no means floppy, and are an excellent value for the price. If you are bowl lathering, the 2/1 or 3/1 may be more to your taste. Best of all, they are the same price as the 1/1.
