What's new

Brown Leaf Acquisitions -- June 2024

I've started off June with a kick: a little tub of Decatur Pipe Shield No-Buff Wax from Pipes&Cigars; and two new tins, the famous Three Nuns tobacco and S. Gawith's Best Brown Flake, from Smokingpipes. I'd have bought all three from the same place, but P & C didn't have the flake and SP didn't seem to have the pipe wax.

I picked up what appears to be an unopened tin of PA from a local antique shop. From what I can find the lack of a zip code in the address dates it to the early 60’s. Now I just need to decide if I want to open it. For $10 I couldn’t turn it down.

No ZIP code, and the abbreviation of the state with periods instead of plain initials as today, i.e., "NC."

Recently, I picked up an old, round Granger tin from a shelf in an antique shop and got a bit excited that it had some weight, and I could hear the contents when I shook the can.

It had been already opened, so I popped the top to see the old tobacco...and found that it was half full of gun powder.

😳😳😳

I notified the shop owner, and she pulled the "bomb" from the shelf.

I’ve wondered if there’s really tobacco in it.

Those tins are way before my time, so I have no idea about how the tobacco is packed inside. Was it inside a wrapper of some sort, inside the tin?...or loose? (Im guessing it was loose.) Either way, can you hear/feel the contents moving when you shake the tin?

If you didn't want to open it, and had an empty, you could compare the weight...or perhaps another member has an empty to weigh for you.

I’m pretty sure the tobacco is wrapped in a paper advertising “sleeve.” Theres definitely something in it, it doesn’t sound loose, more like a package of something, maybe paper wrapped tobacco. Maybe @Columbo can shed a little light on how it was packaged in the early to mid 60s.

That would be a quick smoke!

I don’t know if this really counts as an acquisition because this package was sent to me by @luvmysuper, thanks again man. I can’t wait to try the pipes and tobacco.
TitanEer, the pipes look fantastic. Now maybe this was just me, but I found SH to be rather strong when I first purchased it; it gave me the spins, as people say here. I am finishing the tin I have, but being circumspect about it -- keeping the smoke short, or mixing it with milder blends. If you're new to this stuff, maybe you should watch out at first!

After all, Peterson themselves on the back of the tin give it a rating of 4 for strength out of 5.

The pipes are awesome, I still can't believe he sent two of them. Thanks for the heads up, I will take it easy when I smoke it. I do smoke cigars regularly and prefer medium to full strength, but I have no clue whether that will help or not. I will still be sure to take it easy when smoking it the first time.

A batch of bone arrived today! Got the leaps pipe, a churchwarden with the marble stem, a french bulldog, a slim apple, and a random gnarley which turned out to be a neat little dublin! Going to enjoy them all. The random has some neat grain and blotchy colors in the briar.

The Tobacco is from 2019, so it's got 5 years of mellowing on it and should be a good smoke. Vitamin N never really gives me the loopies, so I usually don't think about it when I share!

If you're used to cigars and the like, maybe you have no worries. I was never a smoker of the white sticks or the Hav-a-Tampas, so I had to get used to even the minimal nic in mild tobaccos. My rule with a new blend is, no more than ten minutes' smoke at first!

On the lookout for new chicks
Went out for a head shave and beard trim earlier this morning. Decided to stop off at a B&M store that’s a satellite location to the one I normally go to. Found me another tin of the Phantom Privateer and a Savinelli 320KS. Love this shape! Been wanting one for a while now.

Yeah, I have no clue if that will help or not. I will still take it easy, smoke for about 5 minutes and take a break. Just in case anyone doesn't know, if you ever get the spins and the light headed feeling from high nicotine intake, consuming something sugary will help.
